Ikaho Onsen

Spread across the slopes of Mount Haruna, Ikaho Onsen is a historic hot spring town known for its stone-step street of three hundred and sixty-five steps. Souvenir shops, shooting galleries, and long-established inns line both sides of the steps, preserving the nostalgic charm of an old spa town. Its signature is the brownish golden water, colored by iron content.

Highlights

The star of the town is undoubtedly the long stone stairway, at the top of which stands Ikaho Shrine. Along the way there are foot baths and drinking fountains where you can rest as you explore. Nearby, the red arched Kajika Bridge is celebrated for its views set against the greenery of the ravine and the colors of autumn.

Enjoying the Seasons

Fresh greenery in spring, cool escape in summer, and the autumn foliage around Kajika Bridge give the town a different look through the year. The illuminated autumn leaves in particular draw many visitors. In winter the air is clear, and lanterns glowing along the snow-dusted steps deepen the atmosphere of the journey.

Access and Basic Information

It is common to arrive by car from the Shibukawa Ikaho interchange on the Kanetsu Expressway. By public transport, buses run from JR Shibukawa Station. In addition to the brownish golden water, there is also a clear, colorless silver water, so you can enjoy two kinds of spring quality here.

A Quick Tip

The steps are numerous and steep, so it is best to visit in comfortable walking shoes. Do not push yourself on the climb, and rest at the foot baths and shops along the way. Keep in mind that the golden water is deeply colored and may leave a tint on your towel.
