Ibaraki Melon

Ibaraki is known as the top melon producing region in Japan. Well draining sandy soil and abundant sunshine grow fragrant, high sugar melons. Varieties range from netted types to green and orange flesh, letting you enjoy different sweetness and aroma with each season.

Highlights

At farm stands and cafes in the growing areas, you can enjoy ripe melons whole or served as parfaits and sweets. The rich fragrance that rises the moment a melon is cut, and the juicy, melting flesh, are exceptional.

Enjoying the Seasons

Early summer through summer is the peak, when seasonal varieties change one after another. A chilled melon in summer creates a luxurious moment that makes you forget the heat.

Access and Basic Information

It can be enjoyed at farm stands and pick your own orchards around Hokota and Kashima. In peak season many people visit, drawn by the sweet aroma.

A Quick Tip

To judge ripeness, use the aroma and the slight give at the base as guides. Chill it a little, then enjoy just before it returns to room temperature to bring out the sweetness.
