Natadera Temple, a Cave Sanctuary of Nature Wisdom

๐ŸŽจ Ishikawa|June 22, 2026

Natadera Temple

In Komatsu, Natadera is an ancient temple of Hakusan faith said to have been founded by Taicho in 717. It honors the sacred mountain Hakusan and preserves the teaching of nature wisdom, a reverence for nature, and its precinct of jagged rocks holds a beauty like a classic landscape painting. Without heavy promotion as a tourist site, it remains a hidden sanctuary where you can quietly settle the heart.

Highlights

- The nationally designated scenic Kigan Yusenkyo, where rock faces carved by nature over long ages resemble another world inhabited by hermits - The womb-passage ritual inside the rock cave of the main hall. Passing through the cave is believed to bring rebirth of body and mind - A wealth of structures designated as important cultural properties, including the main hall and the three-story pagoda, where history and nature blend beautifully

Enjoying the Seasons

Spring brings new greenery, early summer brings deep green that sets off the rocks, and autumn draws many as a famous spot for fall colors. The contrast of colored trees and rock faces is truly stunning. The snowy scenery of winter carries the charm of an ink-wash painting.
