Katayamazu Onsen, a Glass Bathhouse Mirrored in Shibayama Lagoon
Katayamazu Onsen
One of the spas of the Kaga hot spring district, Katayamazu spreads its streets along the shore of a lake called Shibayama Lagoon. Across the water rises the Hakusan range, and the surface that shifts in mood between morning and evening makes this a strikingly scenic spa. Its glass-walled Soyu bathhouse is the symbol of the town.Highlights
The Soyu, designed by the world-renowned architect Yoshio Taniguchi, is largely sheathed in glass and seems to melt into the lagoon and the green of the forest. From the tubs you can gaze out over the lake and Hakusan for a bright, open soak. The lakeside promenade is also pleasantly laid out.Enjoying the Seasons
Spring brings cherry blossoms along the shore, and summer fireworks famed across the region color the lagoon. Autumn tints the surrounding hills, while winter offers a fine contrast between the snow-capped Hakusan range and the lake.Access and Basic Information
About 10 minutes by bus from JR Kaga Onsen Station, or roughly 7 minutes by car from the Katayamazu interchange on the Hokuriku Expressway. The Soyu runs from morning to night, with the mens and womens baths alternating on a rotating basis. Please confirm closing days and fees with the official information.A Quick Tip
Shibayama Lagoon changes greatly between dawn and dusk. Try both a morning and an evening bath to enjoy how the color of the water shifts.📍 Location & Access
