Sanriku Coast and Jodogahama β€” The Blue and White of a Rias Shoreline

Along the rugged Pacific shore of Iwate Prefecture, the Sanriku Coast presents a dramatic landscape of cliff-edged rias, sea caves, and pristine coves where the ocean's deep blue meets brilliant white rhyolite rock. The coastline's most celebrated spot, Jodogahama (Pure Land Beach) near Miyako city, takes its name from the Buddhist concept of paradise β€” early Buddhist visitors thought the contrast of white rock, pine trees, and blue water so beautiful it could only be the Pure Land itself.

Highlights

Jodogahama's distinctive white rocks are rhyolite formed by volcanic activity, worn smooth by millennia of wave action into rounded columns and irregular formations that jut from emerald-green water. The beach itself is small and sheltered, with water clear enough to see the bottom in detail. Glass-bottom boat tours and kayak rentals allow exploration of the sea caves and rock formations that cannot be reached on foot.

The broader Sanriku coastline, designated Sanriku Fukkou (Recovery) National Park, extends nearly 200 kilometers of similar dramatic scenery north to Aomori. Kitayamazaki Cliff β€” a 200-meter near-vertical sea cliff stretching 8 kilometers β€” is one of Japan's most dramatic coastal views, best seen from cruise boats departing Tanohata.

The coast is also deeply moving as a landscape of recovery β€” the 2011 earthquake and tsunami caused devastating losses here, and visiting the rebuilt communities alongside the natural beauty carries a powerful emotional dimension.

Getting There & Tips

From Morioka, take the JR Yamada Line to Miyako (about 2 hours), then walk or bus to Jodogahama (15 minutes). Boat tours depart from the beach landing. The Sanriku Railway connects coastal communities north and south.

Best Time to Visit

May through October for boat tours and swimming. Summer weekends are busy β€” weekday visits recommended. Spring and autumn offer ideal walking weather and fewer crowds.
