Naoshima and Setouchi Triennale — A Miracle Island Transformed into an Art Space

Naoshima and Setouchi Triennale

In the Seto Inland Sea between Okayama and Kagawa Prefectures, the small island of Naoshima has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past three decades — from a declining industrial island to one of the most celebrated contemporary art destinations in the world. The Setouchi Triennale, held every three years across Naoshima and neighboring islands, draws art lovers from across the globe to experience art that exists in genuine dialogue with the sea, the landscape, and the communities that have lived here for generations.

Highlights

The Benesse House Museum, designed by Tadao Ando, integrates gallery spaces into the cliffside overlooking the sea, with artworks by James Turrell, Walter De Maria, and others installed permanently in the landscape. The Chichu Art Museum, also by Ando and built almost entirely underground, houses just five works — including five massive Water Lilies canvases by Monet — each in a space designed specifically for it. The Art House Project transforms historic buildings throughout Naoshima's Honmura village into permanent artworks. Yayoi Kusama's iconic polka-dotted pumpkin sculptures by the harbor are among the most photographed artworks in Japan.

Getting There & Tips

- Ferry from Uno Port (Okayama Prefecture) to Naoshima: approximately 20 minutes. - Ferry from Takamatsu (Kagawa): approximately 50 minutes. - Uno Port: from JR Uno Station (access from Okayama Station via Uno Line, approximately 1 hour). - Rent a bicycle on the island for flexible access to all museums and art sites. - Chichu Art Museum and Benesse House require advance online reservations. - Overnight stays at Benesse House (hotel) are the ultimate art island experience.

Best Time to Visit

Setouchi Triennale years (2022, 2025, etc.) offer the fullest experience with special installations on multiple islands. Outside Triennale years the permanent museums remain excellent. Spring and autumn offer ideal temperatures. Summer is hot but the sea views are brilliant; book ferries and museums well in advance.
