Naoshima and Setouchi Triennale — A Miracle Island Transformed into an Art Space

In the Seto Inland Sea between Okayama and Kagawa Prefectures, the small island of Naoshima (in Naoshima Town, Kagawa District, with a population of around 3,000) has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past three decades, from a declining industrial island once known for copper smelting to one of the most celebrated contemporary art destinations in the world. Best Time to Visit

Setouchi Triennale years (2022, 2025, and so on) offer the fullest experience with special installations on multiple islands, held across spring, summer, and autumn sessions. Even outside Triennale years the permanent museums and outdoor works remain excellent year-round. Spring (April to June) offers fresh greenery, blue seas, and ideal temperatures. Summer is hot but the sea views are brilliant, especially at dusk. Autumn brings clear air perfect for unhurried art viewing.
