Iwaseo Hachimangu Shrine: A Historic Power Spot Beloved as the Guardian of Takamatsu
Iwaseo Hachimangu Shrine
Iwaseo Hachimangu, in Takamatsu City, Kagawa, is the guardian shrine of Takamatsu, affectionately called Iwaseo-san by locals. According to tradition, it began in the year 918 when the great Hachiman deity appeared on Mount Sekitsu, now Mount Iwaseo, and was enshrined there. There is also a tradition that a branch spirit of Iwashimizu Hachimangu in Kyoto was enshrined on Mount Kameno, and that the name Iwaseo joins the names Iwashimizu and Kameno. Its deities are Emperor Chuai, Emperor Ojin, and Empress Jingu. The shrine has a long history, receiving deep reverence from warriors of the Muromachi era and from the lords of the Takamatsu domain in the Edo era, who carried out great construction works here.
