Takinomiya Tenmangu Shrine

Takinomiya Tenmangu, in Ayagawa-cho, Ayauta District, Kagawa, enshrines Sugawara no Michizane, known as the god of learning. In the year 886, Michizane was appointed governor of Sanuki and posted to Takinomiya, where he lived in the official residence of the area. The present grounds are said to be the site of that residence. The shrine itself was founded in the year 948 in memory of Michizane. As a leading god of learning in Kagawa, it draws many worshippers who pray for success in exams and academic achievement. The grounds are also known for the Takinomiya Nenbutsu Dance, designated an important intangible folk cultural property of the nation, performed here each year on August 25.
