Kotohira-gu (Konpira-san) โ€” The Sacred Sea Shrine at the Top of 785 Stone Steps

๐Ÿœ Kagawa|May 1, 2026

Kotohira-gu

Kotohira-gu โ€” popularly known as "Konpira-san" โ€” is one of the most visited and beloved shrines in all of Japan, enshrining Okuninushi-no-Mikoto and Kotohira-no-Kami (identified with the sea deity Watatsumi) as the guardian of seafarers, fishermen, and all who travel. The sacred approach climbs 785 stone steps to the main shrine, with a further 583 steps to the inner shrine โ€” a total of 1,368 steps that pilgrims have been climbing for centuries.

Highlights

The long stone stairway ascent is itself a kind of pilgrimage, lined with stone lanterns, ancient cryptomeria trees, and at the lower levels, the only vendors permitted on the steps: women selling handmade konpeito sugar candies from wooden trays. The main shrine hall commands a sweeping view over the Sanuki Plain and the Seto Inland Sea that makes the climb entirely worthwhile. The treasure house contains a remarkable collection of painted screens by Okyo Maruyama and ex-voto ship models left by grateful sailors. The hilltop Ema Hall is covered floor to ceiling in framed paintings and plaques donated by those who returned safely from the sea.

Getting There & Tips

- From JR Kotohira Station (Dosan Line from Takamatsu, approximately 40 minutes), the approach is a 15-minute walk. - From Kotohiragu-mae Station on the Kotoden Kotohira Line from Takamatsu (approximately 60 minutes). - Portable palanquin (kago) carrying service is available for those unable to climb. - The town at the base of the steps is full of craft shops, udon restaurants, and the historic Kanamaru-za Kabuki theater. - Wear comfortable walking shoes; the steps are steep in places.

Best Time to Visit

Spring cherry blossoms frame the approach magnificently. Autumn foliage in November is equally beautiful. Clear winter days offer the best visibility for the panoramic summit views. The shrine is busiest during New Year, Golden Week, and summer holidays.
