Tamura Shrine in Takamatsu, Kagawa Prefecture, holds the highest distinction of ichinomiya โ the premier shrine of Sanuki Province (modern Kagawa) โ and enshrines a pantheon of five powerful deities including Tamayori-hime-no-Mikoto, a female sea deity associated with water, purification, and the granting of wishes. The shrine is beloved throughout Shikoku for its broad range of spiritual blessings and its long association with the daily life and prosperity of the Sanuki people.

The approach to Tamura Shrine is guarded by an impressive pair of stone komainu (guardian lion-dogs) and lined with towering trees that create a stately transition from the busy city to the peaceful sacred precinct. The main hall's architecture is of a particularly fine quality, and the surrounding grounds include sub-shrines dedicated to various aspects of blessing, making a thorough circuit of the precinct a rewarding spiritual practice. The shrine is particularly known for ema (votive plaques) with distinctive designs, and for a sacred spring where visitors draw water for purification. Annual festivals draw large local participation.
Getting There & Tips
- From JR Takamatsu Station or Kotoden Takamatsu Station, take the Kotoden Nagao Line to Shido Station, then a short bus ride or 20-minute walk. - Alternatively, from Takamatsu Station: approximately 30 minutes by car. - Shrine grounds open for worship at all hours; the shrine office operates 9:00โ17:00. - Kotohira-gu is within half a day's travel, making a combined itinerary logical. - Try genuine Sanuki udon in Takamatsu before or after your visit.
Best Time to Visit
The summer Grand Festival (around July 20) is the shrine's most spectacular event. Spring and autumn are ideal for comfortable visits. The shrine is open and accessible year-round, and the surrounding Takamatsu area offers excellent sightseeing including Ritsurin Garden, one of Japan's most acclaimed landscape gardens.
