Kagoshima is scattered with power spots that feel as though they could purify the soul. The mysterious spaces created by the interplay of grand nature and ancient history hold an irresistible grip on any traveler seeking that perfect photogenic moment. This article covers Kirishima Jingu Shrine, Hiraikimon Shrine, Terukuni Shrine and Chiran Samurai Residence Gardens.

1. Kirishima Jingu Shrine (Kirishima City) โ€” A Vermilion Shrine in the Heart of Deep Forest

Kirishima Jingu (2608-5 Kirishima Taguchi, Kirishima City, Kagoshima Prefecture) is a shrine whose main hall, offering hall, and worship hall have all been designated as National Treasures โ€” and the brilliant vermilion shrine buildings are simply breathtaking. The contrast between the deep green cedar avenue and the vivid vermilion is as beautiful as a painting. The soft early morning light that falls on the shrine buildings is especially fantastical, and misty autumn and winter mornings feel like another world entirely. Shooting the great torii gate from a low angle looking up captures both the shrine buildings and the sky in one dynamic, powerful composition. Access is by bus from JR Kirishima Jingu Station, but services are limited, so be sure to check the timetable in advance.

2. Hiraikimon Shrine (Ibusuki City) โ€” A Miraculous Location Where the Shrine and the Mountain Meet

Hiraikimon Shrine, set against the backdrop of Mt. Kaimondake, offers a miraculous shooting location where you can capture both the beautiful mountain โ€” also called the "Satsuma Fuji" โ€” and the vermilion torii gate in a single frame. On a clear morning, a composition framing Mt. Kaimondake through the torii gate is a truly spectacular view. From winter through spring, when the air is crisp, the mountain's outline is sharpest and most stunning. About 10 minutes on foot from JR Ibusuki Makurazaki Line "Kaimon Station," the shrine grounds are enveloped in stillness and a deeply mystical atmosphere.

3. Terukuni Shrine (Kagoshima City) โ€” Golden Light on the Stone Pavement at Dusk

Terukuni Shrine, enshrined in the heart of Kagoshima City, radiates a refined beauty through its stone-paved approach and white great torii gate. At dusk, the gentle western sunlight pours in and a magical moment arrives when the stone pavement gleams gold. Shooting from the side of the approach in a vertical composition toward the front beautifully expresses the depth from the torii gate all the way to the main hall (avoid the center of the approach, called seichu, which is considered the path of the deities). It is also wonderfully accessible โ€” about 5 minutes on foot from the Kagoshima tram stop "Tenmonkan" (about 20 minutes on foot from JR Kagoshima Chuo Station).

4. Chiran Samurai Residence Gardens (Minamikyushu City) โ€” Hedges and Stone Walls in Exquisite Harmony

The samurai residence district of Chiran, referred to as the "Little Kyoto of Satsuma," has an overwhelming sense of atmosphere in its stone-paved street lined with orderly stone walls and hedges. In spring with fresh green foliage and in autumn with fall colors, the greens and stone tones play together in a perfect harmony. Shooting with both sides of the alley framing a one-point perspective composition creates a depth-filled, Instagram-worthy photograph. Located at 13731-1 Chiran-cho Kori, Minamikyushu City. Admission is paid: 530 yen for adults, 320 yen for middle and elementary school students; open 9:00โ€“17:00 (year-round, no regular closing day). Designated as a nationally Important Traditional Buildings Preservation District, the seven open gardens are designated national Scenic Spots. As this is still a living residential area, please refrain from entering private property or taking photographs over fences without permission.

A journey through Kagoshima's sacred and natural power spots will fill both your photo folder and your heart. Please set out to find your favorite shot.

Practical Information for Your Visit

  • Opening and worship hours / closing days: At Kirishima Jingu Shrine, Hirakiki Shrine and Terukuni Shrine, the hours for worship in the precincts differ from the reception hours of the office where amulets are issued. The Chiran Samurai Residence Gardens are open from 9:00 to 17:00, all year round.
  • Admission: Worship in the shrine precincts is free of charge. The Chiran Samurai Residence Gardens charge an admission fee of 530 yen for adults and 320 yen for elementary and junior high school students.
  • Access: Kirishima Jingu Shrine is at 2608-5 Kirishima Taguchi, Kirishima City, Kagoshima Prefecture. Buses run from JR Kirishima-Jingu Station, but services are limited. The Chiran Samurai Residence Gardens are at 13731-1 Kori, Chiran-cho, Minamikyushu City, reached by bus from central Kagoshima City.
  • Parking: There are car parks at each site. During the first three days of the New Year, the roads around Kirishima Jingu Shrine and Terukuni Shrine become very congested.
  • Etiquette for worship: The main hall, offering hall and worship hall of Kirishima Jingu Shrine are National Treasures. Do not touch the buildings or pillars, and do not go inside the sacred fence. The samurai residences of Chiran are places where residents still live, and entering homes or gardens that are not open to the public is strictly forbidden.
  • Photography rules: Refrain from photographing the interiors of the shrine halls or prayer ceremonies in progress. Using a tripod and commercial photography may require permission in advance, so check with the shrine office. In Chiran, do not photograph residents or the interiors of their homes without permission.
  • Safety notes: If you climb Mount Kaimon, which rises behind Hirakiki Shrine, proper mountaineering equipment is needed. The Kirishima area is an active volcanic zone, and volcanic activity at Shinmoedake and other peaks can lead to restrictions on trails and roads. Be sure to check the latest information from the Japan Meteorological Agency and Kirishima City.
