Kofuku-ji and Kasuga Taisha: A Day Trip from Kyoto to the Ancient Capital of Nara

An easy extension of a Kyoto trip is a visit to the neighbouring ancient capital of Nara. Kofuku-ji and Kasuga Taisha, both adjoining Nara Park, are among the sites that make up the Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara UNESCO World Heritage listing. Reached readily by rail from Kyoto Station, they make a popular day-trip destination where visitors can encounter Japan's ancient culture alongside a park full of roaming deer.

World Heritage Kofuku-ji

Kofuku-ji is the head temple of the Hosso school, with origins dating to 669, and flourished as a temple connected to the powerful Fujiwara clan. Its five-story pagoda, a National Treasure whose current structure was rebuilt in 1426, is one of the tallest wooden pagodas in Japan and a symbol of the Nara skyline. In 2018 the Central Golden Hall was reconstructed, restoring the temple's grand historic appearance. The National Treasure Museum houses celebrated Buddhist images, including the famous Ashura statue, allowing close appreciation of the finest Japanese Buddhist art.

World Heritage Kasuga Taisha

Kasuga Taisha is an ancient shrine said to have been founded in 768, known for its vermilion halls and the many lanterns lining its approaches and corridors. Counting stone and hanging lanterns together, they are said to number more than 3,000, and the Mantoro rite, when all the lanterns are lit at once, is famous for its dreamlike effect. The shrine is registered as World Heritage together with the sacred Kasugayama Primeval Forest. The deer along the approach are regarded as messengers of the gods and live freely throughout the grounds.

Nara Park and the Deer

The area around Kofuku-ji and Kasuga Taisha lies within the vast Nara Park, home to a large herd of wild deer, often cited as around 1,200 animals. The deer are designated a national natural monument, and feeding them the special deer crackers is a quintessential Nara experience. Since they are wild animals, however, approach them calmly and do not tease them with food. Nearby sights such as the Great Buddha of Todai-ji are worth combining into the visit.

• Access from Kyoto: About 45 minutes by JR rapid train from Kyoto Station to Nara Station, or about 35 minutes by Kintetsu limited express (about 45 minutes by express) from Kyoto to Kintetsu-Nara Station.
• Kofuku-ji: About a 5-minute walk from Kintetsu-Nara Station, or about 15 minutes from JR Nara Station.
• Kasuga Taisha: About a 25-minute walk from Kintetsu-Nara Station, or by loop bus to the Kasuga Taisha Honden stop.

Nara is about an hour each way from Kyoto by rail, so an early start allows a comfortable day trip. Best Time to Visit

The area rewards a visit in any season. Spring and autumn are especially scenic, while the Mantoro lantern rites in February and August are held on limited dates, so confirm the schedule in advance if you hope to see them.

Practical Information for Your Visit

• Admission at Kofukuji is cash only: for the Central Golden Hall, the Eastern Golden Hall and the National Treasure Museum alike, it is clearly stated that "payment is in cash only." All three are open 9:00-17:00 (reception closes at 16:45) and open every day of the year.
• Kofukuji admission fees: the National Treasure Museum costs 900 yen for adults and university students, 800 yen for high school and junior high school students, and 500 yen for elementary school students. The Central Golden Hall and the Eastern Golden Hall each cost 500 yen for adults and university students, 300 yen for high school and junior high school students, and 200 yen for elementary school students. A combined ticket for all three costs 1,600 yen for adults and university students, 1,100 yen for high school and junior high school students, and 600 yen for elementary school students, and it is sold from 9:00 to 16:00 (after 16:00 only single-hall tickets are available). No group rate is set for the combined ticket.
• The five-storied pagoda of Kofukuji is under repair: the guide to the temple grounds on the official website states, "The five-storied pagoda is currently under construction, so please check the news section and other announcements for the latest information on the grounds and on visiting."
• Parking at Kofukuji: 46 spaces for ordinary cars and 16 for buses, available 9:00-17:00 (tel 0742-22-4096). The charges are 2,000 yen per visit for passenger cars (ordinary and light cars), 3,000 yen for 2 hours for large buses and microbuses, 1,000 yen per visit for taxis, and 1,000 yen per visit for vehicles only dropping off and picking up passengers. All the roads around the temple are designated no-parking zones, according to the temple's guidance.
• There are no toilets or trash bins in the Kofukuji grounds: the official website asks visitors to "please use the public toilets nearby" and to "please take your trash home with you (there are no trash bins anywhere in the Nara Park area)." Photography is prohibited inside the halls and the museum, and eating, drinking and smoking are also prohibited.
• Opening hours of Kasuga Taisha: the worship area of the main shrine (Omiya) is open 6:30-17:30 from March to October and 7:00-17:00 from November to February. Amulets, charms, goshuin seal stamps and the like are available from 9:00 until closing time all year round.
• Kasuga Taisha special worship at the main sanctuary: 9:00-16:00, offering fee 700 yen. You can worship in front of the Chumon gate and see the hanging lanterns of the corridor and other features. However, it is closed all day from around March 8 to March 13, from December 20 to January 7, and on Coming-of-Age Day. It is also closed in the morning on the 1st, 11th and 21st of every month and on Setsubun, February 17, February 23, March 14, March 15, the Vernal Equinox Day, April 3, the third Friday of May, May 5, May 10, August 7, August 15, the Autumnal Equinox Day, October 9, November 3, November 23 and December 17, and it is closed on the afternoon of December 16 as well.
• Kasuga Taisha Museum (Kokuhoden): 10:00-17:00 (last entry 16:30). Admission is 700 yen for general visitors, 400 yen for university and high school students, and 300 yen for junior high and elementary school students; the group rate for general visitors is 600 yen (for parties of 20 or more; no group rate is set for university students and younger). Admission may differ for feature and special exhibitions.
• Other visits at Kasuga Taisha: no admission fee is charged for the worship area of the main shrine (Omiya). The Manyo Botanical Garden is open 9:00-16:30 (last entry 16:00) and costs 700 yen for adults and 300 yen for children; it is closed on Tuesdays from June to March (open when the Tuesday is a public holiday or similar) and open every day from April to May.
• Parking at Kasuga Taisha: 100 spaces in total for buses and passenger cars. The car park is open 7:30-17:00 from March to October and 7:30-16:30 from November to February. Charges are 1,500 yen for passenger cars, 500 yen for motorcycles, 4,000 yen for buses and 1,000 yen for buses only dropping off passengers. At busy times or because of ceremonies the car park may be reserved for people attending prayers or for buses, and general vehicles may be turned away.
• Access to Kasuga Taisha: from Nara Station on the JR Yamatoji Line or the Kintetsu Nara Line, take a Nara Kotsu bus bound for Kasuga Taisha Honden (about 11 to 15 minutes) and get off at Kasuga Taisha Honden, which is right at the shrine; or take a Nara Kotsu city loop bus (outer loop, about 9 to 13 minutes), get off at Kasuga Taisha Omotesando and walk about 10 minutes. It is about 25 minutes on foot from Kintetsu Nara Station.
• Prohibitions at Kasuga Taisha: pets may not be brought in, drones (small unmanned aircraft) are prohibited, and the entire grounds are non-smoking.
