Kyoto's Largest Autumn Foliage Spot

Tofukuji, one of Kyoto's Five Great Zen Temples, was founded in 1236 at the behest of the regent Kujo Michiie. About 2,000 maple trees are densely packed in the "Sengyokukan" valley viewed from Tsutenkyo Bridge, creating a scene like a red carpet from mid-to-late November. It is one of Kyoto's largest-scale foliage spots.

The autumn foliage viewed from Tsutenkyo Bridge spanning the valley is exceptional. The sea of leaves on both sides of the bridge is Kyoto's signature autumn spectacle and a favorite of photographers. Hojo Garden

Tofukuji's main temple garden (National Special Scenic Spot) is a modern dry landscape garden designed by the Showa-era garden master Mirei Shigemori. Its creative design fusing checkered paving stones, moss, and stone arrangements representing constellations is worth seeing year-round, separately from the foliage.

Access and Crowds

Convenient access within about a 10-minute walk from Tofukuji Station on the JR Nara Line and Keihan Main Line. However, the autumn foliage season is very crowded, and entry to Tsutenkyo Bridge is sometimes limited. To avoid crowds, a weekday early morning visit right after opening is strongly recommended. The temple parking lot is closed during the foliage season, so public transport is reassuring.

Practical Travel Notes

Admission to Tsutenkyo and Kaisando is normally 600 yen for adults and 300 yen for children (elementary and junior high), rising to 1,000 yen for adults and 500 yen for children during the special autumn period (typically mid-November to early December). The Hojo garden is 500 yen for adults and 300 yen for children. Viewing hours vary by season: normally 9:00 to 16:00, but during the special foliage period some days extend, with Tsutenkyo opening around 8:30 in the morning. In winter, from early December, hours shorten to 9:00 to 15:30, so checking the official website for the latest fees and hours before visiting is the surest approach. The grounds are uneven with many steps, so comfortable shoes are recommended.

A Word of Advice

At the foliage peak it is so popular that lines form before opening, so if you want to enjoy the leaves quietly, a weekday early morning is best. While the Tsutenkyo foliage is the main draw, Shigemori's Hojo garden is also impressive and relatively calm even during the crowded season. Those who dislike crowds may also enjoy a visit in early summer, when the green maples are beautiful. From Tofukuji Station, following the signs leads you there without getting lost.
