Village Retaining Edo Atmosphere

Toriimoto is a roadside settlement that prospered with pilgrims to Adashino Nenbutsuji and Atago Shrine, still preserving old farmhouses with thatched roofs. Adashino Nenbutsuji

Adashino Nenbutsuji is a unique temple with thousands of stone Buddhas and stone pagodas gathered in its grounds for unclaimed souls. In August the "Sento Kuyo" ceremony lights votive candles before the stone Buddhas, and the scene of countless stone figures conveys the history of the Sagano area and the prayers of its people.

Practical Information for Your Visit

• Adashino Nenbutsuji: the gate opens at 9:00 and reception closes at 16:30 (15:30 in January, February and December); the gate closes up to 30 minutes after reception ends. Admission is 500 yen for adults, 400 yen for junior and senior high school students, and free for elementary school children and younger when accompanied by a guardian (for groups of 30 or more, 400 yen for adults and 300 yen for junior and senior high school students). The temple is closed to visitors on days with special religious ceremonies, on days when a storm warning is issued for Kyoto City, and on days of snow or ice
• Sento Kuyo (thousand-lantern memorial service): held on the last Saturday and Sunday of August. Reception is 17:30-20:30 (sutra chanting and the lighting of the lamps from 18:00), and the gate closes at 21:00
• Gioji: reception 9:00 to 16:30 (visits possible until 16:50). Admission is 500 yen for adults and 100 yen for elementary, junior high and high school students.
