Minakamiyama: A Mysterious Sacred Mountain in Matsushiro, Nagano
Minakamiyama
Rising over the Matsushiro district of Nagano City, the 659-meter Minakamiyama is a beautifully shaped, cone-like solitary peak. Formed as a lava dome pushed up from below, its graceful form has drawn worship as a sacred mountain since ancient times. In recent years it has even been talked about as possibly the worlds oldest and largest pyramid, making it a quietly cherished power spot for those who enjoy a touch of mystery.
Highlights
- Minakami Shrine (Kumano Izuhayao Shrine) at the summit, an old shrine said to have been founded as Izuhayao Shrine in the year 718, during the Nara period. - A pilgrimage among the several shrines scattered across the mountain, including Iwato Shrine on the mid-slope. - The ease of reaching the very top by car along a mountain road. - Sweeping views of the Matsushiro townscape and the Zenkoji plain from above.
Enjoying the Seasons
From spring into summer, the trail wrapped in fresh greenery is wonderfully refreshing and perfect for a hike. In autumn the whole mountain turns color, letting you enjoy foliage and views at once. In winter the road can ice over, so a snow-free season is recommended. Spending time here in the clear early-morning air gives you the calm, settled feeling unique to a quiet sacred mountain.
