This time we have carefully selected five photogenic spots that make you think "I have to shoot this!" and instinctively reach for the shutter.

01 | Kamikochi (Matsumoto City) — Lose Your Breath in the Crystal-Clear Mirror Reflection

Taisho Pond, which reflects Mt. Yakedake and the Hotaka mountain range on its water surface, has a fantastical beauty as if you had wandered into a painting. In the early-morning hours when haze hangs in the air, mist drifts over the lake surface, producing a shot with depth.

02 | Hakuba Village (Kitaazumi District) — The Miraculous Contrast of Remaining Snow and Rapeseed Blossoms

Hakuba Village in spring, where vivid yellow rapeseed fields spread out against the white peaks of the Northern Alps, is truly a sacred site for Instagram-worthy photos. The overwhelming color contrast of blue sky, silver-white, and yellow produces picturesque photos even with a smartphone camera.

• Best Time and Season: The time of day when the morning light is soft / late April to early May
• Shooting Angle: A "foreground-blur composition" with plenty of rapeseed blossoms in front and the mountains placed in the background is recommended
• Access: Head to each shooting point on foot or by taxi from "Hakuba Station" on the JR Oito Line

03 | Kirigamine (Suwa City) — A Dreamlike Highland Floating Above a Sea of Clouds

Kirigamine spreads across a vast grassland at an elevation of 1,600 m. In early summer, colonies of nikko-kisuge (day lilies) dye the highland golden, and in autumn a mysterious scene unfolds with a sea of clouds spreading out below. The changing colors of the sky during the magic hour, when the light is soft, are also spectacular.

• Best Time and Season: Around sunrise / nikko-kisuge in July, sea-of-clouds season in September-October
• Shooting Angle: Shooting wide-angle as if crossing the ridgeline produces a shot that conveys the vastness of the highland
• Access: About 45 minutes by bus from "Kami-Suwa Station" on the JR Chuo Line (get off at the Kirigamine bus stop)

04 | Togakushi Shrine Okusha Approach (Nagano City) — A Mysterious Tunnel of Cedar Trees

The Okusha approach, lined with giant cedar trees over 400 years old, is a mysterious space created by light and shadow. The moment sunlight filtering through the trees streams straight down onto the approach is so beautiful you instinctively lose your voice. In winter, when snow piles up, another extraordinary fantastical world spreads out.

• Best Time and Season: Around 10-11 a.m., the time of filtered sunlight / fresh greenery in May, snowscape in January-February
• Shooting Angle: The classic is a "vanishing-point composition," standing to one side of the approach and shooting straight toward the back (avoid the center of the approach, called seichu, which is considered the path of the deities)
• Access: About 60 minutes by bus from Nagano Station (15-minute walk from the Togakushi Chusha bus stop)

05 | Onogato (Matsumoto City / Utsukushigahara Highland) — 360° Panorama from an Observatory Above the Clouds

From Onogato, the highest peak of Utsukushigahara Highland at an elevation of 2,034 m, a 360° spectacular view awaits where you can take in the Northern, Central, and Southern Alps at a glance. The gradation in which the sky dyes from orange to pink at dusk is a beauty truly like "the scribbles of a god."

• Best Time and Season: Dusk to magic hour / summer to autumn is best
• Shooting Angle: Placing the antenna cluster in the foreground produces a photo with a distinctive sci-fi worldview
• Access: About 70 minutes by car from central Matsumoto City via the Venus Line (closed in winter)

The greatest charm of Nagano's great nature is how it completely changes its expression with each season and time of day. No matter how many times you visit, you should encounter new "photogenic" moments. Be sure to set out with your camera in hand to search for a shot that is yours alone.

Practical Information for Your Visit

• Best season and time of day: Kamikochi and Taisho Pond during the morning mist just after sunrise, in the fresh-green season (May to June) and the autumn foliage season (October). The cherry blossoms at Oide Park are usually at their best from late April to early May. The nikko-kisuge day lilies at Kirigamine usually bloom in July.
• Opening hours / periods: Kamikochi closes for the winter; the Prefectural Route Kamikochi Park Line is usually open from around mid-April to November 15, and passable from 5:00 to 19:00 (5:00 to 20:00 in July and August) (the closing ceremony for the season is in mid-November). Local buses toward Kirigamine and Kurumayama run seasonally (usually May to October, and only on certain days). The road up to Utsukushigahara is usually closed for the winter from around mid-November to late April.
• Fees: The transfer parking lots for Kamikochi cost 700-800 yen per day at Sawando (both figures appear in the official information) and 600 yen per day at Akandana (shuttle bus fares are extra). The Nagawa Town parking lot in front of Yamamotogoya Furusatokan at Utsukushigahara is free.
• Access: Kamikochi is closed to private vehicles all year round; private cars, rental cars and motorcycles may not go beyond the Kama Tunnel. Transfer to a shuttle bus or taxi at the Sawando or Akandana parking lots. For the Togakushi Okusha, take a bus from Nagano Station and get off at "Togakushi Okusha Iriguchi" (about 1 hour); from the entrance of the approach to the Okusha it is about 2 km, roughly a 40-minute walk. For Ogato, ordinary vehicles may not go beyond Yamamotogoya, and it is about a 1-hour walk (about 2 km).
• Parking: There is no parking for general visitors at Kamikochi (use Sawando or Akandana). At Utsukushigahara there is the town-run parking lot in front of Yamamotogoya Furusatokan (free, about 80 spaces).
• Photography rules: Kamikochi is a special protection zone of Chubu Sangaku National Park, where collecting plants and animals and straying from the boardwalks and trails are prohibited. When using a tripod, be considerate not to obstruct people on the boardwalks or bridges. Flying a drone within a national park requires permission from the administrator as a rule, so check in advance. The approach to the Okusha of Togakushi Shrine is sacred ground; do not block the center of the approach or the stone steps with a tripod. The area around Oide Park in Hakuba is private land adjoining houses and farmland, so do not enter without permission and do not park on the road.
• Safety notes: Kamikochi is at an altitude of about 1,500 m, and mornings and evenings are cold even in midsummer, with mist and low temperatures beside Taisho Pond at dawn. Bring warm clothing and comfortable walking shoes. It is also bear habitat, so take particular care if moving alone in the early morning and carry a bear bell. The approach to the Togakushi Okusha is an unpaved uphill path, and in winter it becomes snowy and icy, so light crampons or similar are needed. Ogato at Utsukushigahara stands at an altitude of 2,034 m, where strong winds, lightning and sudden changes in weather are common; it grows dark after shooting at dusk, so always carry a headlamp.
