Standing in Tateshina-machi, Tateshina Shrine is a village shrine that enshrines Mount Tateshina (2,530 meters) to the south as its sacred body. An inner shrine rests at the summit of Mount Tateshina, and according to shrine tradition it is an ancient shrine said to have been worshipped as far back as the eastern campaigns of Yamato Takeru. Long revered as a guardian deity of expectant mothers, it carries a belief that worshipping here brings flourishing descendants. Though close to the highland resorts, its quiet, settled atmosphere is its charm.
