Suwa Lake: Shinshu Lake Colored by Omiwatari Ice Ridges and Fireworks

Suwa Lake lies almost at the center of Nagano, ringed by Suwa City, Okaya City, and Shimosuwa Town, with a circumference of about 16 kilometers. Highlights

In winter, the surface of Suwa Lake freezes. In the severe cold (January to February), after the whole lake freezes, day-night temperature differences cause the ice to expand and contract, and the Omiwatari phenomenon, ridges of ice traversing the lake, can occur. This mysterious natural event, said to mark where a deity crossed the lake, is honored in years it appears by a ritual observance at Yatsurugi Shrine in Shimosuwa. While records span some 600 years, in recent years warm winters have meant many years without it, so its appearance is precious enough to make the news.

On the shore of Suwa Lake stands Suwa Taisha, the head shrine of the many Suwa shrines across Japan. Considered one of Japan's oldest shrines, it is divided into four precincts: Kamisha Honmiya and Maemiya, and Shimosha Akimiya and Harumiya. The Onbashira Festival, held once every seven counted years, features the spirited ritual of dragging huge trees down from the mountains to the villages and draws many spectators from around the country. Touring all four shrines, the Yonsha-mairi, is also popular.

The Suwa Lake Festival Lake-Surface Fireworks, held each year on August 15, is known as one of Japan's largest-scale fireworks displays, its appeal lying in the fireworks reflected on the lake surface and the power of sound echoing off the mountains. In September, the National New Fireworks Competition is also held. For fireworks, summer is best; for the Omiwatari and clear air, winter (January to February) is recommended. April, when the lakeside cherry trees bloom, and cool, easy-to-walk early autumn (September to October) are also comfortable.

Access and Basic Information

From Kamisuwa Station on the JR Chuo Main Line, the lakeside is about a 10-minute walk. Linked toward Shinjuku by the Azusa limited express, it is also convenient to reach by train. By car, head from the Suwa IC on the Chuo Expressway, with parking dotted around the lake. There is no charge for strolling the lakeside or using the promenade. On the day of the fireworks there are traffic restrictions and heavy crowds, so reserving paid seats in advance or using public transport is advisable.

Practical Travel Notes

The promenade circling the lake runs about 16 kilometers and can be covered in about one to two hours by rental cycle. There are many hot-spring inns around Kamisuwa Station, and a one-night, two-day trip combined with the four-shrine tour of Suwa Taisha is recommended. There are also foot baths to enjoy free or for a small fee, perfect for a rest between walks. Accommodation for the fireworks fills up early, so plan ahead. Budget from a few hundred to a couple thousand yen for walking, bathing, and meals.
