Access and Basic Information

From JR Matsumoto Station, a bus bound for the Utsukushigahara Onsen area takes about twenty-five minutes, and it is right by the last stop. By car it is around twenty minutes from the Matsumoto interchange on the Nagano Expressway. The spa town has a day-use facility, Shiraito-no-yu, with a striking storehouse-style exterior, where you can enjoy source-fed water for an adult fee in the several-hundred-yen range. The water is a skin-friendly alkaline simple spring. Hours can change with the season, so it is reassuring to check before dropping in.

Utsukushigahara Onsen is close to central Matsumoto, so it is best to take half a day to a full day, combining it with a stroll around Matsumoto Castle and Nakamachi-dori. • Spring quality: Weakly alkaline simple hot spring. The water is colourless and transparent, and the spring is designated a National Health Resort Hot Spring by the Environment Agency
• Source temperature: 42 to 45 degrees Celsius
• Benefits: Neuralgia, arteriosclerosis and others
• How the water is handled: Free-flowing straight from the source. The water in the showers and taps is spring water too
• Open-air bath: There is an open-air bath attached to the Yamabe-kan building
• Day-use bathing hours: From April, 6:30-22:00 (reception closes at 21:30); from October, 7:00-22:00 (reception closes at 21:30). On 31 December it is 7:00-20:00 (reception closes at 19:30), and on 1 January 8:00-22:00
• Closing days: The first and third Tuesdays. When these fall on a public holiday the bath generally opens and another Tuesday may be taken as the closing day instead. A list of the planned closing days for the year is published on the official website
• Prices: 400 yen for adults, 200 yen for children (elementary and junior high school students), free of charge for pre-school children. These are the revised prices that took effect on 1 April 2025 (Reiwa 7)
• Multi-visit tickets: A book of 11 tickets costs 4,000 yen and a book of 23 tickets 8,000 yen. PayPay is accepted. They are valid for 180 days
• Provided items and towels: Soap, shampoo and the like are not provided, and there is no rental of towels or similar. Disposable bathing items and towels are sold at reception. Hairdryers are chargeable
• Rest room: There is no rest room where you can lie down
• Soba-making experience: Held in the training room on the second floor from 9:00 to 15:00 (reservation required). It costs 4,000 yen per person, or 3,600 yen for guests staying at inns belonging to the association, with a minimum of two participants. It takes about 1.5 hours, and bookings cannot be made the day before or on the day itself. There is a lift to the second floor
• Tennis courts: Five courts. One court costs 1,040 yen per hour and they are available from 6:30 until sunset. Users of facilities belonging to the association pay 520 yen
• Parking: There is a car park for ordinary cars. There is no parking for large buses
• Access (by bus): About 12 minutes from Matsumoto Bus Terminal on the Gurutto Matsumoto Bus Utsukushigahara Onsen Line; get off at the Utsukushigahara Onsen stop and walk 3 minutes
• Access (by car): About 20 minutes from Matsumoto Station, about 25 minutes from Matsumoto IC and about 80 minutes from Nagano Station
• Nearby: The Matsumoto City Museum of Art, the Nakamachi and Nawate streets, Matsumoto Castle and the old Kaichi School building are all about 10 minutes away by car. Utsukushigahara Highland is about 50 minutes by car and Kamikochi about an hour. You can also combine a bathing tour with neighbouring Asama Onsen
