An Ancient Temple Founded by Emperor Tenmu

In 680, Emperor Tenmu vowed to build it as a prayer for the recovery of his consort, later Empress Jito, and it was founded at Fujiwara-kyo. It is said to have been moved to its present site when the capital shifted to Heijo-kyo. Its principal image is Yakushi Nyorai, the Buddha of healing, long revered as one who cures illness and saves people. The Beauty of the National Treasure East Pagoda

The symbol of Yakushiji is the National Treasure East Pagoda, the only structure surviving from the time of founding.
