Bitchu Matsuyama Castle: Spectacular View of the Sky Castle and Fantastical Mountain Castle Floating in Sea of Clouds

In a valley where morning mist gathers, a keep rises alone atop the mountain. Bitchu Matsuyama Castle in Takahashi City, Okayama is a fantastical mountain castle known as the sky castle for the way it seems to float on a sea of clouds. Standing at the highest location among Japan surviving original keeps, its mysterious scenery looks like a fortress hovering in the heavens, letting visitors enjoy both historical romance and spectacular views.

Bitchu Matsuyama Castle is a mountain castle built atop Komatsuyama, one peak of Mt. Gagyuzan at about 430 meters elevation. It is one of the 12 surviving original keeps and is known as the highest-altitude among them. The current keep is said to have been built by Mizutani Katsumune in the early Edo period, around the Tenna era (about 1683), and is designated a National Important Cultural Property. Though a compact two-tiered keep, its stone walls that cleverly incorporate natural bedrock and its layout firmly built on the steep summit have the impact of a natural stronghold.

The resident castle cat, Sanjuro, is also popular. Beloved as the cat castle lord, it welcomes many visitors who climb up to the castle.

The Sky Castle in a Sea of Clouds

The reason Bitchu Matsuyama Castle is called the sky castle is the sea of clouds seen on early mornings from autumn to spring. Morning mist rising in the basin wraps around the castle, and the fantastical scene appears in which only the summit keep floats above the clouds. This view is best admired from the observation deck across the way, near Fuigo Pass. It is a rare sight that appears only when weather conditions align, such as a clear, chilly morning with little wind.

Seasonal Enjoyment

The sea of clouds can generally be seen on early mornings from late September to early April, and it is said to be most likely from late October to early December. A clear, calm morning with radiative cooling is the best chance. The castle itself can be visited year-round, and the fresh greenery and autumn foliage seasons also suit a mountain castle. The castle-town streets of Takahashi change their appearance with the seasons.

Access and Basic Information

The gateway is Bitchu-Takahashi Station on the JR Hakubi Line. From the station, a shared bus or sightseeing shared taxi to Fuigo Pass is convenient, and from Fuigo Pass it is about a 20-minute walk up to the keep. It is about 30 minutes by limited express from Okayama Station. The castle town of Takahashi retains historic buildings including samurai residences, merchant houses, and a church, which can be toured together.

Practical Travel Notes

• The mountain path requires sturdy walking shoes. Footing is slippery when wet, so take care.
• To aim for the sea of clouds you must head to the observation deck before dawn. Do not forget cold-weather gear.
• Private cars may be restricted beyond Fuigo Pass during certain hours, so using the shared bus or taxi is recommended.
• Opening hours and fees may change by season, so check in advance.
• Touring the samurai residences of the castle town (Ishibiya-cho) as well gives a deeper sense of Takahashi history.

Practical Information for Your Visit

• Opening hours and closing days of the keep: 9:00-17:30 from April to September and 9:00-16:30 from October to March. The castle is closed from 29 December to 3 January.
• Admission: 500 yen for adults and 200 yen for elementary and junior high school students (10 percent discount for groups of 30 or more, 20 percent discount for groups of 100 or more). Admission is free for elementary and junior high school students of Takahashi City on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, for city residents aged 65 and over, and for those with a disability certificate.
• Castle shuttle bus: The shuttle connects the Shiromibashi Park car park (at the fifth station) with Fuigo Toge (at the eighth station) in about 5 minutes. It runs at intervals of about 15 minutes from 8:45, with the last services at 16:30 going up and 17:45 coming down from April to September, and 15:30 going up and 16:45 coming down from October to March. The shuttle fee is 500 yen for adults and 200 yen for elementary and junior high school students (return only; one-way tickets are not sold). The operating period runs from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027.
• Parking and traffic restrictions: The Shiromibashi Park car park holds 110 vehicles and the Fuigo Toge car park holds 14. While the castle shuttle bus is operating, private cars cannot use the road between Shiromibashi Park and Fuigo Toge.
• Bitchu Matsuyama Castle sightseeing shared taxi [advance reservation required]: Runs daily between Bitchu-Takahashi Station and Fuigo Toge (the eighth station). Departures from the station are at 10:00, 11:30, 13:00 and 14:20, and departures from Fuigo Toge are at 11:50, 13:20, 14:40 and 16:10. The fare is 1,000 yen per person one way (including children who use a seat). Reserve with the Takahashi City Tourist Information Office (0866-22-8666) by 17:00 the previous day.
• Sea of clouds observation deck shared taxi [advance reservation required]: Operates from 1 October to 31 March, with two services departing at 7:30 (returning around 8:40) and 8:00 (returning around 9:10), each taking about 70 minutes. The fare is 3,000 yen per person return. Reserve with the Takahashi City Tourist Information Office (0866-22-8666) by 17:00 the previous day.
• Access to the sea of clouds observation deck and points to note: It is located in Okumanda-cho, Takahashi City, but as it is in the mountains it has no street number, and it is approached from the direction of Narai, Matsuyama, Takahashi City. Walking there takes about 12 kilometres (3 hours) and is not recommended. There is no car park, so vehicles park in a line along the road, and it becomes crowded during the season. The only toilets are portable ones. You may encounter wild monkeys, designated a Natural Monument of Japan, and from December to the end of February you need to watch out for snow and icy roads.
• When and at what time the sea of clouds can be seen: In the early morning from late September to early April, from daybreak until around 8 a.m. Dense morning mist can especially be expected in the early morning from late October to early December. It is said to appear most readily on clear days when the previous day was warm and the early morning turns cold, or when it has rained 2 or 3 days beforehand.
• Sanjuro, the cat castle lord: A cat that fled the torrential rain of July 2018 and settled in the castle; you may get to meet him when you visit the castle.
