Saikoji Temple

Perched on the slopes of Mt. Washiuzan in Asakuchi, Okayama Prefecture, Saikoji Temple enshrines Toyokawa Inari โ€” placing it among Japan's Three Great Inari Shrines alongside Fushimi Inari in Kyoto and Toyokawa Inari in Aichi. The temple is renowned for powerful blessings related to business prosperity, good fortune, and the fulfillment of wishes, drawing devoted visitors from across western Japan throughout the year.

Highlights

The most striking feature of the approach to the main hall is the tunnel of hundreds of vermilion torii gates that wind up the hillside, creating a corridor of red that rivals the famous Fushimi Inari in atmosphere. Stone fox (kitsune) guardian statues line the pathways in great numbers, each bearing a different expression and holding different objects โ€” some with scrolls, others with jewels or sheaves of rice. The main hall commands sweeping views over the Seto Inland Sea and the distant islands that dot its shimmering surface. Seasonal festivals here draw large crowds and fill the mountain with lanterns and chanting.

Getting There & Tips

- From JR Kasaoka Station (on the Sanyo Main Line), take a bus or taxi approximately 20โ€“30 minutes. - By car: approximately 15 minutes from Kasaoka IC on the San'yo Expressway. - The precincts are open for worship at all hours; the temple office operates daytime hours. - Comfortable walking shoes are essential as the paths to the main hall involve significant uphill walking. - Inari fox amulets and business prosperity charms are especially popular at the shrine shop.

Best Time to Visit

The Hatsuuma Festival in February is the most important annual event, drawing the largest crowds for prayers for business success and good harvest. Cherry blossoms in spring and autumn foliage in November make the hillside particularly beautiful. Clear days in any season reward with spectacular Seto Inland Sea panoramas.
