Churaumi Aquarium and Nakijin Castle Ruins — World-Class Aquarium and Ryukyuan Heritage
Churaumi Aquarium and Nakijin Castle Ruins
In the lush tropical landscape of northern Okinawa's Motobu Peninsula, two of the island's most extraordinary attractions sit within 15 kilometers of each other — combining natural spectacle with one of the most evocative historical ruins in the Ryukyu world. Ocean Expo Park and Nakijin Castle Ruins together make for an unforgettable full day in northern Okinawa.
Highlights
Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, within Ocean Expo Park, houses one of the world's largest aquarium tanks: the Kuroshio Sea tank holds 7,500 cubic meters of water and contains whale sharks — the largest fish on earth — swimming freely with manta rays and thousands of other species. Watching these titans move through the tank from the observation hall is an awe-inspiring experience available at few aquariums globally. The surrounding Ocean Expo Park is vast, with dolphin shows, manatee pools, and traditional Okinawan village recreations. Nearby Nakijin Castle Ruins, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, occupies a hilltop with remarkable 14th-century stone walls curving across the landscape. In January–February, Okinawa's earliest cherry blossoms (higansakura, deep pink) bloom along the castle walls in a combination of natural and historical beauty found nowhere else in Japan.
Getting There & Tips
From Naha, expressway buses and tour buses reach the Motobu area in about 2 hours. A rental car offers the most flexibility for combining both sites. Churaumi Aquarium admission is approximately ¥2,180. Nakijin Castle admission is ¥600. Allow 3–4 hours for the aquarium and park, 1–1.5 hours for Nakijin.
Best Time to Visit
Cherry blossom season at Nakijin (late January–early February) is a unique and highly recommended annual event. The aquarium is excellent year-round. Avoid Obon holiday (August) and Golden Week for crowds. Northern Okinawa can receive typhoon impact July–September.
