Ishigaki and Yaeyama Sea Day Course

This is a one day plan circling Ishigaki Island, the gateway to the Yaeyama Islands. From the emerald green sea of Kabira Bay to the ferry hub for outlying islands, it is packed with tropical charm. The airport is close to the town, so you can get around efficiently by rental car.

Course Route

9:00 Start at the Ishigaki town ferry terminal The port where ferries leave for islands like Taketomi. Take a morning stroll or do some shopping nearby. 9:30 Stroll the Euglena Mall public market The largest arcade shopping street on Ishigaki. Island specialties and souvenirs are on display. 10:30 Drive to Tamatori Saki Observation Deck A popular deck on the east side with a view of the narrow neck of the island and the blue sea. 12:00 Lunch in town or in the north Enjoy island flavors like Ishigaki beef and Yaeyama soba. 13:30 Sightsee at Kabira Bay A Michelin three star scenic spot. A glass boat lets you watch coral and tropical fish. 15:30 Head to Ugan Saki Lighthouse A cape at the western tip of the island, known for cliffs, a lighthouse and sunsets. 17:00 Return to town and finish At night, island food and awamori near the ferry terminal are a fine choice.

Highlights

Kabira Bay has fast currents so swimming is not allowed, but the gradation of white sand and blue sea is breathtaking. Peering underwater from a glass boat, you meet colorful coral and fish. From Tamatori Saki you can view the narrow neck of the island and both the East China Sea and the Pacific.

Access and Tips

Swimming is prohibited at Kabira Bay, so choose another beach if you want to swim. The island has few traffic lights and is easy to drive, but watch for animals crossing the road. If you extend to islands like Taketomi, using a morning ferry makes the schedule more efficient.

A Quick Tip

Ishigaki is further south than the main island and the sun is strong, so a hat and sunscreen are essential. If combining with island sightseeing, staying overnight is recommended.
