Shuri Castle and Naha International Street โ€” Ryukyu Kingdom History and Culture

Shuri Castle and Naha International Street

The two most iconic attractions of Naha โ€” Shuri Castle and Kokusai-dori (International Street) โ€” represent complementary faces of Okinawa: the ancient royal heritage of the Ryukyu Kingdom and the vibrant, market-stall commercial culture of modern Okinawa. Together they form the backbone of a rich full day in the prefectural capital.

Highlights

Shuri Castle's Shureimon gate and the UNESCO-listed palace complex on its hill above Naha embody the artistic and political achievement of the Ryukyu Kingdom (1429โ€“1879). The surrounding castle town preserves traditional stone-paved streets (the Kinjo-cho stone road is particularly beautiful), old wells, and banyan-draped walls that survive from the royal period. Kokusai-dori, stretching 1.6 kilometers through central Naha, is a different kind of immersion: a strip of restaurants, souvenir shops, sanshin music stores, awamori distilleries, and Okinawan craft galleries where the full commercial culture of the island is on boisterous display. Side streets branch into the covered Makishi Market, where the upper floor restaurants will cook any seafood or meat purchased downstairs โ€” a beloved local tradition. Bingata fabric, lacquerware, shisa lion-dog figures, and sea-grape (umibudo) seaweed are among the distinctive Okinawan products to look for.

Getting There & Tips

From Naha Airport, the Yui Rail reaches Makishi Station (for Kokusai-dori) in about 8 minutes and Shuri Station (for the castle) in 13 minutes. Plan the castle in the morning before heat and crowds build; save Kokusai-dori for the afternoon and evening when restaurants fill with energy. Budget ยฅ2,000โ€“ยฅ3,000 for admission fees and ยฅ2,000+ for food and shopping.

Best Time to Visit

Year-round, but spring (late Januaryโ€“March) brings Okinawa cherry blossoms to the castle grounds. The Shuri Castle Festival in November is especially dramatic. Summer evenings on Kokusai-dori are lively; winter weekday mornings offer the most relaxed castle exploration.
