Shuri Castle Park — World Heritage of the Ryukyu Kingdom
Atop a hill overlooking Naha, the capital of Okinawa Prefecture, Shuri Castle was for nearly 500 years the palace of the Ryukyu Kingdom — an independent maritime state that maintained sophisticated diplomatic and trade relationships with China, Japan, Korea, and Southeast Asia. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the most visited attraction in Okinawa, Shuri Castle Park preserves the extraordinary cultural legacy of a civilization distinct from both Japan and China.
Highlights
The castle's most iconic feature is Shureimon gate — its sweeping curved Chinese-style roof and vivid red lacquer making it one of the most photographed structures in Okinawa (it appears on the ¥2,000 note). The main hall (Seiden) was destroyed in the Battle of Okinawa in 1945 and again by fire in 2019; restoration work is ongoing with projected completion in 2026. Even partially under reconstruction, the castle park offers extraordinary experiences: the stone paving of Ukishima street, the Sonohyan Utaki stone gate (a National Treasure), the Nanteiden and Bandokoro side halls, and the rampart views over Naha and the East China Sea. Museum spaces within the park illuminate the Ryukyu Kingdom's unique culture, dress, music, and diplomatic sophistication.
Getting There & Tips
From Naha Airport or Naha city, take the Yui Rail (Okinawa Monorail) to Shuri Station (about 13 minutes from Kencho-mae). The castle park is a 15-minute walk from the station, or a short taxi. Park grounds are free; inner castle buildings charge admission (check current access due to restoration). Allow 2–3 hours.
Best Time to Visit
The cherry blossoms of Okinawa — Japan's earliest, blooming in late January to February — are spectacular on the castle grounds. The Shuri Castle Festival in October–November features elaborate Ryukyu court ceremonies in historical costume. The castle is accessible year-round; typhoon season (July–September) carries weather risk.
