Mikami Shrine

Mikami Shrine in Yasu City sits at the foot of Mount Mikami, whose graceful cone has earned it the nickname Omi Fuji. The enshrined deity, Ame no Mikage no Kami, is said to have descended onto the mountain, and the peak itself is revered as a sacred body. Unlike the busy lakeside landmarks, this shrine rests quietly in a roadside grove, making it a beloved hidden spot among those in the know.

Highlights

- The National Treasure main hall, built in the late Kamakura period, in a rare style called Mikami zukuri that blends shrine, temple hall, and palace forms. - Grounds that look up to Mount Mikami rising behind, where mountain and shrine seem to merge into one sacred atmosphere. - Important Cultural Property structures such as the worship hall and tower gate, standing calmly side by side.

Enjoying the Seasons

In spring, walk the sacred grove glowing with fresh greenery, and in autumn the colored leaves frame the old buildings beautifully. Mount Mikami has well kept trails, so climbing to the summit for a sweeping view of the Omi plain after your visit is a fine idea.

- From Yasu Station on the JR Biwako Line, take a bus to Mikami Jinja Mae and walk about 3 minutes. - Located along Route 8, with easy access by car. - The grounds are open for free visits, offering quiet, unhurried time.
