Hometown of Omi Merchants

Omihachiman is one of the birthplaces of the Omi merchants who traveled and traded throughout Japan during the Edo period. Known for the philosophy of sanpo yoshi, meaning good for the seller, the buyer, and society, their spirit of valuing contribution to society over mere profit is still highly regarded as forward-looking, resonating with modern business ethics.

Hachimanbori Canal and Waterways

Hachimanbori Canal was built by Toyotomi Hidetsugu as a canal connecting the castle town with Lake Biwa when he built Hachimanyama Castle. As a main artery of logistics, it supported the prosperity of the Omi merchants. Today, white-walled storehouses and old homes line the stone-paved promenade, and the atmospheric scenery is carefully preserved. Often used as a period drama filming location, the waterside can also be enjoyed by boat tour. Hachimanyama's summit is easily reached by the Hachimanyama Ropeway, offering views of Lake Biwa, Lake Nishinoko, and the Azuchi area.

Azuchi Castle Ruins

Within Omihachiman City remain the ruins of Azuchi Castle, the legendary castle built by Oda Nobunaga as a base for national unification. Though it was a magnificent castle with a grand keep, it burned down shortly after the Honnoji Incident. Grand stone walls and the main approach road still remain in the mountains, conveying the power of the warlord and the advanced castle-building technology of the time.

Fusion of Western Culture

Architect William Merrell Vories, active in Omihachiman during the Meiji and Taisho periods, left many Western-style buildings in this area. The elegant Western architecture scattered throughout the city harmonizes beautifully with the traditional Omi merchant townscape, creating a unique landscape woven from Japanese and Western styles.
