Iwami Ginzan is the remains of a mine that once helped supply the world with silver. The tunnels where the ore was dug, the town of Omori where the miners lived, and the port of Yunotsu that shipped the silver out are all inscribed together as World Heritage. This route walks through the layers of that history over a full day and ends by easing your travel weariness at an old hot spring.

Course Route

9:30 Learn at the World Heritage Center Start at the Iwami Ginzan World Heritage Center. Study the history of the mine and how the ore was extracted through the exhibits before heading into town.

10:30 Stroll the town of Omori Take a bus to the Omori district and explore on foot or by rental bicycle. Along streets that mix samurai and merchant houses, you will find the former magistrate site and quiet old shops.

11:30 Ryugenji Mabu tunnel Enter Ryugenji Mabu, a tunnel worked since the Edo period. Tracing the chisel marks on the rock, you can picture the hard labor of mining in those days.

12:30 Lunch at a townhouse cafe Enjoy lunch made with local ingredients at a cafe or eatery set inside a restored old house in Omori.

14:00 Travel to Yunotsu Onsen Drive about thirty minutes to Yunotsu Onsen, the port that thrived shipping silver. It is a retro hot spring street lined with wooden buildings.

15:00 Rest at a public bath Soak in a long established public bath to warm your body and close out the trip.

Highlights

The Ryugenji Mabu tunnel keeps hand cut marks on its cool rock walls, letting you feel the history of the mine firsthand. The town of Omori is not flashy, but its calm, lived in streets are its charm. At Yunotsu, the very street of wooden bathhouses is part of the World Heritage listing, and simply walking it carries a sense of the past.

Access and Tips

To protect the environment, private cars are restricted from the center of the Omori district. The usual approach is to park at the World Heritage Center and move by bus or rental bicycle. The tunnel and streets involve a fair amount of walking, so dress and shoe yourself for easy movement.

A Quick Tip

The public baths of Yunotsu are built in the old style, and some run a little hot. Learning the etiquette from a local as you bathe lets you enjoy the areas hot spring culture all the more.
