Matsue Castle Town and Moat Cruise Half Day Course

Set on the shore of Lake Shinji, Matsue is a castle town often called the city of water. At its heart stands Matsue Castle, whose surviving keep is designated a national treasure. Cruise the old moat that rings the castle by boat, then walk the Edo era lane of Shiomi Nawate, and you can taste the best of the castle town in half a day.

Course Route

9:30 Matsue Castle keep Begin at the imposing keep clad in dark timber. Climb the steep stairs to the top floor, where the view opens over Lake Shinji and the town below.

10:30 Castle park stroll Leaving the keep, wander Jozan Park past stone walls and moats. The area is especially lovely during cherry blossom and autumn leaf seasons.

11:00 Moat cruise Board a small covered boat and circle the moat over about fifty minutes. The roof lowers each time you pass beneath a low bridge, and the boatman shares stories as you glide along the water.

12:00 Walk Shiomi Nawate After disembarking, follow Shiomi Nawate, lined with old pines. Samurai residences and sites connected to the writer Lafcadio Hearn make this the lane with the strongest Edo atmosphere.

13:00 Lunch and tea Finish at a teahouse with local warigo soba, or matcha served with a seasonal sweet.

Highlights

The keep of Matsue Castle carries the dignified look of the Momoyama period, and its pillars and beams convey a real sense of history. On the moat cruise, the stone walls seen from the water and the greenery of the banks changing with the seasons stand out. The quiet lane of Shiomi Nawate makes you feel as if you have stepped back in time.

Access and Tips

From JR Matsue Station, the bus or the Lake Line loop is the easy way to reach the castle. A day pass for the moat cruise lets you get on and off freely at the boarding points, which pairs well with walking. The keep can develop a wait on the stairs when crowded, so climbing early in the morning is best.

A Quick Tip

The boat roof drops low at certain points, so follow the boatman signal to avoid bumping your head. Matsue has a deep tea culture, so working a tea break into your walk lets you feel the local mood all the more.
