Set on the shore of Lake Shinji, Matsue is a castle town often called the city of water. At its heart stands Matsue Castle, whose surviving keep is a national treasure. The keep was completed in 1611 and designated a national treasure in 2015. Cruise the old moat that rings the castle by boat, then walk the Edo era lane of Shiomi Nawate, and you can taste the best of the castle town in half a day.

Course Route

9:00 Matsue Castle keep Begin at the imposing keep clad in dark timber. Climb the steep stairs to the top floor, where the view opens over Lake Shinji and the town below. The pillars and beams inside carry the weight of history and the look of the Momoyama period. Early in the morning the stairs are relatively clear, so you can view in calm.

10:30 Castle park stroll Leaving the keep, wander Jozan Park past stone walls and moats. The area is especially lovely during cherry blossom and autumn leaf seasons.

11:00 Moat cruise Board a small covered boat and circle the moat. The roof lowers each time you pass beneath a low bridge, and the boatman shares stories as you glide along the water. With a day pass you can get on and off freely at the boarding points.

12:00 Walk Shiomi Nawate After disembarking, follow Shiomi Nawate, lined with old pines. Samurai residences and sites connected to the writer Lafcadio Hearn make this the lane with the strongest Edo atmosphere.

13:00 Lunch and tea Finish at a teahouse with local warigo soba, or matcha served with a seasonal sweet. Matsue is known as a tea town alongside Kyoto and Kanazawa, so a break for sweets and tea is a moment to feel the local culture.

Highlights

The keep of Matsue Castle carries the dignified look of the Momoyama period, and its pillars and beams convey a real sense of history. On the moat cruise, the stone walls seen from the water and the greenery of the banks changing with the seasons stand out. The quiet lane of Shiomi Nawate makes you feel as if you have stepped back in time.

Access and Tips

From JR Matsue Station, the bus or the Lake Line loop is the easy way to reach the castle. A day pass for the moat cruise lets you get on and off freely at the boarding points, which pairs well with walking. The keep can develop a wait on the stairs when crowded, so climbing early in the morning is best.

Practical Travel Notes

Time Needed Allow thirty minutes to an hour for the keep, about ninety minutes for the Jozan Park stroll and the moat cruise together, and an hour to ninety minutes for walking Shiomi Nawate and lunch, and you can cover the route comfortably in half a day.

Getting There From JR Matsue Station, the Lake Line sightseeing loop bus is handy and links the main sights, or it is about a twenty minute walk. By car there are paid parking lots near the castle. The moat cruise circles the castle, so it combines naturally with visits to the keep and Shiomi Nawate.

Passes and Budget The moat cruise offers a day pass that lets you board and alight freely, which pairs well with strolling the castle town. Even adding the keep entry, the boat fare, and lunch, a half day stays within a reasonable budget. Checking the latest prices on each facility official guide before you go is reassuring.

Avoiding Crowds The keep can develop a wait on its steep stairs when busy. Climbing early in the morning lets you view in calm. During popular cherry blossom and autumn color seasons, moving early, including through Jozan Park, is recommended.

A Quick Tip

The boat roof drops low at certain points, so follow the boatman signal to avoid bumping your head. Matsue has a deep tea culture, so working a tea break into your walk lets you feel the local mood all the more.
