Yunotsu Onsen - A Healing Village Within a World Heritage Site

Yunotsu Onsen

Set on the coast of Ota City, Yunotsu Onsen is a historic port town that once thrived as the harbor from which silver was shipped out of the Iwami Ginzan mines. It is registered as part of the World Heritage site of the Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine and its cultural landscape, and few spa towns in the whole country share such a listing. Wooden inns and bathhouses stand shoulder to shoulder along narrow lanes, and the nostalgic townscape feels as if time has stopped.

Highlights

Two historic public bathhouses sit at the heart of the town, each fed by water with its own character. The older bathhouse is especially striking, with a high ceiling and time honored construction that vividly convey the mood of a healing retreat. Walk the stone paved lanes and you pass white walled buildings and latticed doors, offering the calm stroll befitting a port town.

Enjoying the Seasons

From spring into summer, bath hopping while savoring seafood from the Sea of Japan is a delight. Autumn brings clear air to the quiet harbor and suits a reflective walk through the streets. In winter, warming yourself to the core in the hot water after gazing at the wild sea is a special pleasure. Through all four seasons, simple and unpretentious hospitality welcomes travelers.

Access and Basic Information

The onsen lies in Yunotsu, Ota City. From Yunotsu Station on the JR Sanin Main Line it is only a few minutes on foot or by taxi. It is easy to reach by car from the center of Iwami Ginzan, and many visitors combine the two. The public baths are open to day visitors, and chatting with locals is one of the joys of the trip.

A Quick Tip

The water in the public baths can run quite hot, so ease your body in gradually and do not push yourself. Kilns of the local Iwami pottery are scattered nearby, so hunting for a piece after your bath is a fine idea. Let yourself sink slowly into the pace of the town while feeling the weight of its history.
