Adachi Museum and Yasugi Garden Half Day Course

The signature sight of Yasugi is the Adachi Museum of Art, ranked at the top of Japanese garden lists for many years. Guided by the founder belief that a garden is itself a painting, the vast grounds are tended down to the smallest detail. Viewing the garden alongside masterworks by Yokoyama Taikan, and touching the local culture of Yasugi, makes for a calm half day.

Course Route

9:30 Adachi Museum of Art Enter as the museum opens. Head first to the windows that frame the celebrated garden like a living picture, and quietly take in a view that changes with every season.

10:30 View the painting collection Take your time with masterpieces of modern Japanese painting by Yokoyama Taikan and others, along with the ceramics collection.

11:30 Tea with a garden view Rest at the tearoom inside the museum with matcha and a sweet while looking out over the garden.

12:30 Lunch Enjoy local flavors at an eatery near the museum or in central Yasugi.

14:00 Yasugi town and culture Visit a cultural facility for the Yasugi Bushi, known for its humorous loach scooping dance, and touch this local folk art.

Highlights

The greatest draw of the Adachi Museum is its Japanese gardens, including the dry landscape garden and the white gravel and pine garden. The white sand in front, the pines behind, and the mountains beyond are all arranged like a single painting, so every window frames a picture perfect scene. The Yokoyama Taikan collection indoors is equally rewarding, and enjoying both garden and paintings at once is the real appeal.

Access and Tips

A free shuttle bus runs from JR Yasugi Station to the museum in about twenty minutes. By car it is roughly ten minutes from the Yasugi interchange on the Sanin Expressway. The garden looks very different by season and weather, so choosing a target season such as snowfall or autumn color is part of the fun.

A Quick Tip

The garden seen through the windows shifts with the light. A clear morning brings soft light and is one of the most beautiful times to view it. To avoid crowds, aim for right after opening so you can view in calm.
