Matsue Suigo Festival: Lake Shinji Fireworks

The "Matsue Suigo Festival," held every August in Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture, is one of the San'in region's signature summer events, famous for fireworks launched from the surface of Lake Shinji. Symbolizing "Matsue, the water capital," the festival unfolds against the atmospheric scenery woven by the lake and the old castle town, and the dreamlike sight of great blossoms of fire opening both in the night sky and on the water draws several hundred thousand spectators every year. Its scale and splendor, said to be among the largest in San'in, are overwhelming.

Great Fireworks Blooming over Lake Shinji

The biggest highlight of the Matsue Suigo Festival is the fireworks launched from above Lake Shinji. Over the two days of the festival, several thousand to ten thousand shells color the night sky each night, and the "underwater star mine" that spreads in a fan across the whole width of the lake is especially powerful. The bursts reflect on the calm surface, creating a vertically symmetrical, dreamlike scene. Fireworks set against a wide lake have an open, liberating beauty quite different from a fireworks show in the middle of a city.

The Atmosphere of Matsue, the Water Capital

Matsue lies between Lake Shinji and Nakaumi, with the Horikawa moat circling the old castle town, and is known as the "water capital." Around the festival venue rises the national treasure Matsue Castle, and there is plenty to see, from the sightseeing boats on the moat circuit to the sunset over Lake Shinji, famous as one of Japan's finest. Before the fireworks, strolling along the lakeshore to soak up Matsue's distinctive waterside mood is also recommended. The landscape, where the history of the castle town harmonizes with nature, deepens the emotion of the festival still further.

Water Parade and Traditional Performing Arts

Beyond the fireworks show, the Matsue Suigo Festival also features a "water parade" with many houseboats coloring Lake Shinji. Traditional performing arts, folk songs, and dances performed on the boats are also festival highlights.

Events around Matsue Castle

During the festival period, various events are also held around Matsue Castle. Temple fair stalls, food stalls, and traditional performing arts presentations keep things lively late into the night.

Best Season and Access

Access to the venue on the shore of Lake Shinji is about 15 to 20 minutes on foot from JR Matsue Station, and about 3 to 4 hours from the Osaka direction by train or highway bus. The Matsue Suigo Festival is a summer-only event, usually held on a Saturday and Sunday in early August. The lakeshore venue is within walking distance of "Matsue Station" on the JR San'in Main Line, and the whole area from around the station to the venue serves as the viewing zone. It gets extremely crowded on the day, so arriving early to secure a spot and using public transport are recommended. Combine it with Matsue Castle, the sunset over Lake Shinji and local specialties such as Izumo soba, and you will have an unforgettable trip that makes the most of summer in San'in.

Practical Information for the Fireworks (2026)

• Dates: Saturday August 1 and Sunday August 2, 2026
• Number of shells: 10,000 on August 1 and 11,000 on August 2 (21,000 in total over the two days)
• Timetable: gates open 17:00 -> be seated by 19:00 -> drone show from 20:00 -> fireworks over the lake from 20:15. The alert period is 18:00 to 21:30 and navigation and anchoring are prohibited from 19:30 to 21:15
• Venue: the shells are launched from four barges on Lake Shinji, and the viewing area is divided into three zones, Kohoku (north lake), Shirakata and Konan (south lake) (Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture)
• Nearest stations: JR Matsue Station (for the Shirakata and Konan zones) and Matsue Shinjiko Onsen Station (for the western side of the Kohoku zone). The JR San'in Main Line and the Ichibata Electric Railway run extra trains. On the other hand, Ichibata Bus and the municipal buses run no extra or additional services, and all municipal bus services departing their first stop after 19:30 are suspended; there are also detours, suspensions and closed bus stops
• Parking: paid car parks are fully reservation-only (Lawson Ticket, L-code 67778, on sale from 10:00 on June 6). Usable hours are 15:30 to 23:00 at all venues. • Traffic restrictions: in force on both days; during the restricted hours no vehicles or bicycles may pass at all. Pedestrian-only roads 15:00 to 22:00 (some sections) / 19:00 to 22:00 / 19:00 to 21:30 / 21:00 to 22:00, and one-way traffic 19:00 to 22:00. The pavement on the west side of Shinjiko Ohashi bridge is closed from 14:00, and Shinjiko Ohashi bridge (paid seating) is closed from 19:00 to 21:00

• Saving a spot: not allowed until 18:00 on the day. Sheets left unattended or laid out before 18:00 will be removed by the organizers. Stopping to watch on Shinjiko Ohashi bridge is prohibited. Areas such as the parks outside the paid viewing zones are free viewing areas, but you may not watch from no-entry zones, pavements, or land belonging to other people or companies. Visitors are also asked to refrain from watching at Shinjiko SA. Bringing in or using anything involving fire is not permitted
• In case of rain: even if it rains from the morning, the decision is held off until the last moment. The event can also be cancelled because of wind even in fine weather. If it is cancelled before the launch, paid seating is fully refunded; if it is cancelled partway through the launch, there is no refund. There is no postponement.
