Karakama Shrine, a Hidden Power Spot in the Mountains of Izumo, Shimane
Karakama Shrine
Tucked into the mountains of Izumo City in Shimane Prefecture, Karakama Shrine is known even among locals as a shrine that is hard to reach. It is an ancient shrine recorded in the old Izumo regional chronicle, and because the area has never been heavily developed for tourism, the approach itself feels almost like a small pilgrimage.
Highlights
- A steep flight of about 300 stone steps that begins after you pass the torii gate at the end of a mountain path - A gap in a massive boulder, only about 45 centimeters wide, right before the main hall. You must turn sideways and squeeze through to reach it - A long history of faith, with Susanoo enshrined here as a deity connected to ironworking and blacksmithing culture - Mysterious rock formations tied to the legend of a stone boat said to have carried Susanoo
Enjoying the Seasons
From spring into early summer, fresh greenery wraps the stone steps and dappled sunlight falls at your feet. In autumn the surrounding trees turn color and the crisp air makes the visit feel refreshing. Even in summer the shade among the trees stays relatively cool. In winter snow and ice make the steps slippery, so take extra care with your footing.
Access and Basic Information
- Location: Karakawacho, Izumo City, Shimane Prefecture - From the parking area you still need to continue on foot along a mountain path - Mobile phone signal is weak here - Sturdy clothing and shoes are essential because of the unpaved trail and steep stone steps
A Quick Tip
This is not a shrine to visit in a skirt or dress shoes. Bring comfortable trousers and sneakers, and allow plenty of time during daylight hours. The rocks become very slippery after rain.
