Yomotsuhirasaka

Located in Higashiizumocho, Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture, Yomotsuhirasaka is said to be the boundary between the world of the dead and the world of the living that appears in the Izumo myths recorded in the ancient Kojiki. It has none of the flashiness of a major tourist site, but it carries a distinctive atmosphere where you can quietly let your thoughts drift into the world of myth.

Highlights

- The mythical setting where Izanagi is said to have followed his late wife Izanami toward the land of the dead - A stone monument marking the sacred site, surrounded by a quiet grove of trees - A beloved custom of writing letters at a post box dedicated to delivering thoughts to loved ones who have passed - A convenient location to visit together with nearby Iya Shrine, which enshrines Izanami

Enjoying the Seasons

In spring and autumn the grove takes on a calm expression, making it pleasant for a stroll. In summer the shade is cool and the stillness stands out. In winter visitors are sparse and the air feels all the more mysterious. In every season, the place moves at a pace far removed from any noise.
