5 Photogenic Buildings and Streetscapes in Shizuoka

Shizuoka Prefecture has plenty of beautiful buildings and streetscapes that make you want to point your camera. From historic castles to Western-style mansions full of exotic charm, we carefully introduce spots that are sure to be Instagrammable.

1. Sunpu Castle Park (Shizuoka City)

The ruins of Sunpu Castle — associated with Tokugawa Ieyasu — offer a breathtaking landscape of moats and stone walls. In particular, the restored Higashi Gomon Gate and Tatsumi Yagura, with their white-plaster walls, black roof tiles, and wooden elements, make an eye-catching shot against a blue sky. Strolling through the park is free, but entry to the buildings such as the Higashi Gomon and Tatsumi Yagura is charged (¥200 for adults for the Higashi Gomon / Tatsumi Yagura alone; ¥360 for adults / ¥120 for elementary and junior high school students for a combined ticket with the Hitsuji-yagura and Koyo-zan Garden; open 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM, last admission 4:00 PM, closed Mondays).

• Best time & season: The cherry blossom season in spring is exceptional! Soft morning light beautifully illuminates the stone walls.
• Shooting angle: A "reflection shot" with the castle gate mirrored in the surface of the moat is ideal. Aim from a low angle along the moat.
• Access: About 15 minutes on foot from JR Shizuoka Station

2. Hamamatsu Castle (Hamamatsu City)

Hamamatsu Castle, though compact in its keep, has an imposing dignity, and its stone walls built using the "nozurazumi" (rough-stacked natural stone) technique radiate a rugged beauty. The stone walls surrounded by green trees feel like something from a storybook. Strolling through Hamamatsu Castle Park is free, but entry to the keep and Tenshu-mon Gate is charged at a combined ¥200 (free for junior high school students and below), open 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM (last admission 10 minutes before closing).

• Best time & season: Autumn foliage season; the late-afternoon raking light that creates shadows and texture on the stone walls
• Shooting angle: A low angle looking up from below the stone walls to convey a sense of scale
• Access: About 15 minutes by bus or on foot from JR Hamamatsu Station

3. Former Mitsuke School (Iwata City)

Built in Meiji 8 (1875), this is the oldest surviving wooden Western-style elementary school building in Japan (a nationally designated Historic Site). A third floor was added in Meiji 16 (1883), making it a five-story building affectionately known as "the five-story school." The white walls × arched windows × namako-kabe (diamond plaster) panels in their Japanese-Western hybrid design are a treasure trove of retro photo opportunities! Free admission, open 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM, closed Mondays (open if Monday is a public holiday or substitute holiday).

• Best time & season: Morning, during the period of front-lit sunlight. The combination with a blue sky maximizes the Instagram potential.
• Shooting angle: A symmetrical composition from directly in front is recommended. Capture both a wide shot of the entire building and a close-up of the arched windows.
• Access: About 5 minutes by bus from JR Iwata Station, alight at "Mitsuke"

4. Nirayama Reverberatory Furnaces, Izunokuni City

One of the component sites of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage "Sites of Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution." The roughly 16-meter-tall chimneys rising into the sky make for uniquely industrial photography. Admission is charged at ¥500 for general visitors (high school students and above) and ¥50 for students. Viewing hours are 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM from March through September, and 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM from October through February, with closures on the third Wednesday of each month (or the following day if it falls on a public holiday) and December 31 – January 1.

• Best time & season: As the site closes at 5:00 PM (4:30 PM from October through February), silhouette shooting after sunset is not possible. On a clear winter morning, Mt. Fuji stands out sharply and can be captured together with the reverberatory furnaces in a "dual subject" composition.
• Shooting angle: The popular composition places the reverberatory furnaces in the foreground with Mt. Fuji as the backdrop — a "two-star" composition.
• Access: About 10 minutes by bus from Izu-Hakone Railway "Izunagaoka Station"

5. Atami Ginza and Around Kiunkaku (Atami City)

Atami Ginza retains a Showa-era retro atmosphere, and Kiunkaku — a residential mansion built in 1919 (Taisho 8) as a private villa — together create a world that feels like stepping back in time. In particular, the Western-style wing of Kiunkaku, with its beautiful stained glass and white walls, has an emotional quality when shot vertically. Admission is ¥610 for adults, ¥360 for junior and senior high school students, free for elementary school students and below; open 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM (last admission 4:30 PM), closed every Wednesday (and also closed December 26–30).

• Best time & season: An overcast day with soft, diffuse light is ideal. Since Wednesday is the closed day, keep this in mind when planning your itinerary.
• Shooting angle: Shooting from the inner courtyard of Kiunkaku with the building all around you produces a deep, Instagram-worthy photo.
• Access: About 15 minutes on foot from JR Atami Station (to Kiunkaku)

Practical Information for Your Visit

• Best season and time of day: Sunpu Castle Park in the morning during the cherry blossom season in spring. Hamamatsu Castle in the evening during the autumn foliage season (view the stone walls from outside within the park's opening hours). The Former Mitsuke School in the morning under front lighting, when a blue sky shows it off best. The Nirayama Reverberatory Furnaces on a winter morning when the air is clear, when you can capture them together with Mt. Fuji.
• Opening hours and periods: The Higashi-gomon Gate and Tatsumi Yagura Turret in Sunpu Castle Park are open 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (last entry 4:00 p.m.), closed on Mondays and from 29 December to 3 January. The keep and keep gate of Hamamatsu Castle are open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (last entry 10 minutes before closing). The Former Mitsuke School is open 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., closed on Mondays (open when Monday is a public holiday or a substitute holiday). The Nirayama Reverberatory Furnaces are open 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. from March to September and 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. from October to February, closed on the third Wednesday of each month (the following day when it is a public holiday) and from 31 December to 1 January. Kiunkaku is open 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (last admission 4:30 p.m.), closed every Wednesday and from 26 to 30 December.
• Admission: Higashi-gomon Gate and Tatsumi Yagura Turret in Sunpu Castle Park = 200 yen for adults (a combined ticket for the three facilities including the Hitsujisaru Yagura Turret and Momijiyama Garden is 360 yen for adults and 120 yen for elementary and junior high school students). Hamamatsu Castle keep and keep gate = 200 yen for both (free of charge for junior high school students and younger; 10% discount for groups of 30 or more). Former Mitsuke School = admission free of charge. Nirayama Reverberatory Furnaces = 500 yen general (high school students and older), 50 yen for students and children (free of charge for Izunokuni City residents and visitors with disabilities). Kiunkaku = 610 yen for adults, 360 yen for junior and senior high school students, free of charge for elementary school children and younger. Simply strolling within Sunpu Castle Park and Hamamatsu Castle Park is free of charge.
• Access: Sunpu Castle Park is about a 15-minute walk from JR Shizuoka Station. Hamamatsu Castle can be reached by bus or on foot from JR Hamamatsu Station. For the Former Mitsuke School, take a bus from JR Iwata Station for about 5 minutes and get off at "Mitsuke". For the Nirayama Reverberatory Furnaces, take a bus for about 10 minutes from "Izu-Nagaoka Station" on the Izuhakone Railway. Kiunkaku is reached by bus from JR Atami Station, getting off at "Kiunkaku-mae", or on foot.
• Parking: Please check each facility's official website for the latest information on whether parking is available and what it costs. The streets around Atami Ginza are narrow with many one-way sections, so public transport is recommended.
• Photography rules: At Kiunkaku, the use of tripods indoors and commercial photography are restricted in order to preserve the building. Follow the on-site notices and staff instructions. Photography rules are likewise set for the exhibition rooms of the Former Mitsuke School, the Hamamatsu Castle keep, and inside the Higashi-gomon Gate and Tatsumi Yagura Turret. The Nirayama Reverberatory Furnaces are a component part of a World Cultural Heritage site, and entering or touching the remains is prohibited. Flying drones and commercial photography require prior application to the facility or local authority concerned. Atami Ginza is a working shopping street, so please be considerate and do not photograph shop interiors or shoppers without permission.
• Safety notes: The Nirayama Reverberatory Furnaces, Kiunkaku, the Former Mitsuke School, the Hamamatsu Castle keep and the Higashi-gomon Gate all close by early evening. If you visit intending to shoot after sunset, you will not be able to enter. The stone steps up to the Hamamatsu Castle keep are steep and become slippery in the rain. Some sections along the moat in Sunpu Castle Park have no railings, so avoid stepping backwards while looking through the viewfinder.
