Furumine Jinja (Kanuma)

Tucked deep in the mountains of Kanuma City, Furumine Jinja is an old shrine dedicated to Yamato Takeru no Mikoto. It has long been revered as a sacred center of tengu worship, where the tengu are regarded as messengers of the deity. Worshippers travel from across the country seeking blessings for fire protection, good fortune, and family safety. The precinct, wrapped in lush greenery, is filled with such clear, still air that it is fittingly called the Forest of the Tengu.

Highlights

- The famous and vividly colored tengu goshuin, with dozens of designs, each carefully drawn by hand - Tengu masks and statues of all sizes enshrined throughout the grounds, creating a uniquely solemn atmosphere - The spacious strolling garden known as Kohoen, where scenery shifts with each season

Enjoying the Seasons

Spring brings fresh greenery, summer offers cool shade, and autumn paints the surrounding mountains in brilliant color. In winter, the snow-hushed precinct feels almost dreamlike. The goshuin are very popular, and some designs may take time to complete, so it is best to visit with time to spare.

Access and Basic Information

- Location: Kusagyu, Kanuma City, Tochigi Prefecture - About 40 minutes by car from central Kanuma, along mountain roads that call for careful driving - Public transport is limited, so coming by car is the most convenient option

A Quick Tip

If you would like a goshuin, apply at the reception first and then stroll the grounds at leisure so your wait feels worthwhile. As this is a remote mountain site, do not forget comfortable walking shoes and warm clothing.
