Chuzenji Onsen

This hot spring resort spreads along the shore of Lake Chuzenji at an elevation of about 1,200 meters. Its source is drawn from Nikko Yumoto Onsen in Oku-Nikko, and since the water was piped in around the mid-Showa era it has grown as a base for sightseeing in Oku-Nikko. More than anything, its setting with views of majestic Mount Nantai and the clear lake is its great appeal.

Highlights

Many inns have open-air baths overlooking the lake, letting you take in Mount Nantai and Lake Chuzenji as you soak. Nearby are Kegon Falls, one of Japan three most famous waterfalls, and the lakeside Futarasan Shrine Chugushi, so there is no shortage of sights. Sightseeing boats also depart from the lakeshore.

Enjoying the Seasons

In summer it is popular as a cool retreat, with refreshing lakeside walks. Autumn brings splendid foliage along the Irohazaka slopes, dyeing all of Oku-Nikko in brocade hues. In winter, amid the deep cold, you can gaze from the baths at the stillness of the snow-covered lake and mountains.

Access and Basic Information

From JR Nikko or Tobu Nikko stations, a bus climbs the Irohazaka slopes and arrives in about 45 minutes. By car, take the Kiyotaki interchange on the Nikko Utsunomiya Road and go via the Irohazaka. Some inns offer day-use bathing.

A Quick Tip

The Irohazaka tends to get congested during the foliage season, so setting out early in the morning is reassuring. Combine your visit with Kegon Falls and a lakeside walk to fully enjoy Oku-Nikko over a full day.
