Torinoko Jinja (Nakagawa)

Torinoko Jinja sits atop Mount Torinoko, which straddles the border between Tochigi and Ibaraki Prefectures, making it a truly unusual shrine. It is known for the rare fact that the prefectural boundary runs through the center of the great torii gate and the center of the main hall. The principal deity is Ame no Hiwashi no Mikoto, a god of birds. The owl is regarded as the deity messenger, and through a play on words meaning free from hardship, the shrine is beloved as an auspicious place that takes troubles away.

Highlights

- Some 120 charmingly varied owl statues enshrined throughout the grounds - A giant owl statue said to be the largest in the country, where people gather to pray for good fortune and wealth - Playful touches such as an owl-themed stone stairway and an owl postbox

Enjoying the Seasons

In early summer the precinct is colored by hydrangeas, and in autumn the summit blazes with fall foliage. Thanks to the high elevation and clear air, visits feel refreshing throughout the year. Touring the owl statues one by one to discover the blessing each holds makes for an enjoyable visit.

Access and Basic Information

- Location: Yamata, Nakagawa Town, Tochigi Prefecture, on the border with Ibaraki - Access is mainly by car from the nearest town, and the road to the summit narrows in places - Stone steps lead from the parking area up to the main hall

A Quick Tip

Each owl statue is said to grant a different blessing, such as good fortune, wealth, or success in love. Choosing which statue to pray before based on your wish makes for a more memorable visit. Be sure to come in comfortable walking shoes.
