Fukuroda Falls and Daigo Okukuji Shamo Course

Daigo Town in northern Ibaraki is a nature rich village blessed with deep mountains and clear streams. Above all, Fukuroda Falls is counted among Japans three great waterfalls, and its form cascading down in four tiers is spectacular. It changes expression with each season, and in winter you can even see the falls freeze into an ice fall. With gourmet such as the Okukuji shamo chicken making use of the mountains bounty, this course satisfies both body and soul.

Course Route

10:00 Arrive at Fukuroda Falls Pass through the tunnel to the viewing platform. The powerful falls spreading before you may draw a gasp.

10:30 Tour the first and second viewing platforms Take the elevator up to the higher observation deck to enjoy the falls from different angles above and below.

11:30 Suspension bridge and area walk Cross the suspension bridge near the basin and feel the spray and roar up close.

12:30 Lunch with Okukuji shamo Taste the firm textured shamo raised locally in a rice bowl or hot pot.

14:00 Stroll the streets of Daigo Stop by the old streetscape and roadside station, choosing local apples and konjac as souvenirs.

15:00 Rest at a hot spring Soak in a nearby hot spring to ease the fatigue of the waterfall tour and close the day.

Fukuroda Falls shows completely different faces in each season. Beyond the fresh greenery and autumn foliage seasons, the ice fall in the depth of winter is a special sight. Okukuji shamo is known for its elastic texture and deep savory flavor, a taste you will not forget once tried.

Access and Tips

From the nearest Fukuroda Station, head to the falls by bus or taxi. The mountain roads can freeze in winter, so watch your footing in the cold season. Since you walk through a tunnel to the viewing platform, comfortable shoes bring peace of mind.

A Quick Tip

There are spots around the falls where the ground gets wet from the spray. Choose non slip shoes and dress warmly in winter. If you are aiming for the ice fall, it is best to keep checking information on days when the temperature has dropped.
