Mt. Tsurugi

Mt. Tsurugi (altitude 1,955m), the second-highest peak in Shikoku, is the king of autumn leaves that Tokushima boasts. The contrast between the gently spreading bamboo grass near the summit and the brocade-like foliage covering the slopes is a sight you can never forget once you see it. On clear days you may encounter the fantastical scene of autumn leaves floating above a sea of clouds, and your hand holding the camera trembles in spite of itself. The 360-degree autumn-leaf panorama surveyed from a ridge near 2,000m altitude is a scale truly worthy of being called a "sky-high autumn-leaf terrace."

The best season is early to mid-October. The autumn leaves near the summit come earliest, and as the weeks pass, a wave of color surges down toward the foot. The recommended time of day is early morning to late morning. In the time when the morning sun shines in at an angle, the leaves of the trees glitter like jewels, and the whole mountain emerges dramatically. Especially the morning after a perfectly clear day, a sea of clouds is likely to form, a chance to encounter a "miraculous morning view" where autumn leaves and a sea of clouds overlap. Arriving the day before to stay at the mountain foot and starting your climb with the dawn is the best strategy for grasping this superb view.

As a way to enjoy it like a local, by all means extend your steps to the "Nagoro Village" near the trailhead. This village, famous for scarecrow art, has the charm of a rustic landscape where autumn terraced rice fields and autumn leaves melt together. The sight of life-sized scarecrows doing farm work or sitting on porches is somehow humorous, yet also poignantly conveys the reality of a mountain village where depopulation is advancing. It's a hidden spot, not overly commercialized, where you can feel the air of a living mountain village.

For those not confident in mountain climbing, using the lift is also recommended. Since it carries you to Nishijima Station (altitude 1,750m) in about 15 minutes, you can savor the superb view regardless of physical strength. The experience of losing your words before the sea of autumn leaves spreading right before you the moment you step off the lift will surely become a lifelong memory for hiking beginners. The yellow leaves of beech and Erman's birch scattered along the way to the summit mingle with the deep green of conifers, like a "moving painting" that changes expression with each step. If you bring a camera, having both a wide-angle and a telephoto lens lets you enjoy varied autumn-leaf expressions.

Access

• By train + bus: From JR Tokushima Station, take a Tokushima Bus to "Sadamitsu" or "Anabuki" (about 1 hour to 1 hour 20 minutes), then by bus or taxi to the trailhead "Minokoshi" in about 1 hour. Since shared taxis run from Anabuki Station in some seasons, inquire with the tourist association in advance
• By car: About 2 hours from Tokushima City via National Route 438. There is a parking lot at Minokoshi (large buses can park too). Note that whether there is a fee has not been officially stated.
• Notes: On weekends in the autumn-leaf season, the area around the trailhead is heavily congested. Early-morning departure on a weekday is the iron rule. Cold-weather gear is essential, and near the summit there are days when the temperature drops below 5°C even in October. Because lift operation changes with the weather, checking the official website the day before is reassuring. Also, because there are very few convenience stores around Minokoshi, procure food and drink in Tokushima City before heading out

Oboke

True to the origin of its name, "It's dangerous to walk with big strides," the sheer cliffs carved over long years by the rapids of the Yoshino River are overwhelmingly powerful. Autumn Oboke, when autumn leaves color those steep cliffs, is the season when Tokushima's natural beauty speaks most eloquently. The collaboration of autumn leaves and strange rocks gazed up at from the riverside promenade has a dynamic power different again from autumn leaves in the mountains. The sight of fiery vermilion and gold autumn leaves clinging to crystalline schist cliffs created by hundreds of millions of years of the earth's workings is itself a grand artwork painted by nature.

The best season is late October to mid-November. Because of the gorge terrain, many parts are in shadow in the morning, so the time around 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., when the sun shines into the depths of the gorge, allows the most beautiful shooting. Around midday on a clear day when the light angle aligns exquisitely, the emerald-green surface of the Yoshino River and the autumn leaves of the cliffs draw out each other's beauty, giving you the sensation of peering into a multicolored jewel box.

Something you absolutely should experience is the "Oboke Gorge Pleasure Boat." On the roughly 30-minute boat journey, you can view the superb scenery of cliffs and autumn leaves invisible from land, from the water's surface. It's a luxurious time to immerse yourself fully in the autumn gorge beauty, listening to the murmur of the river and the boatman's witty guidance. Look up and autumn leaves cling to cliffs tens of meters high, and the power of them jutting out from both sides of the boat has an emotion of "you have to experience it" that photos can't fully convey. The autumn-leaf season is especially popular, and on weekends a wait may occur before boarding. Aim for an early sailing right after opening, or use it on a weekday.

Also, the Koboke area, a little further from Oboke, has few tourists, a hidden gem where you can quietly savor the gorge beauty. Park your car along National Route 32 and have the wild autumn leaves all to yourself. It's a superb-view spot known only to those in the know, to the extent that locals unanimously say "Koboke's autumn leaves are denser." By visiting it as a set with Oboke, a greedy trip experiencing the "front and back" of gorge beauty is completed.

Access

• By train: Get off right at JR Dosan Line "Oboke Station" (about 1 hour 40 minutes to 2 hours from Tokushima Station, transferring at Awa-Ikeda Station). Oboke Station is an unstaffed station, but the station building itself has charm, and you can already sense a glimpse of the gorge beauty from the platform
• By car: About 1 hour 30 minutes from Tokushima City via the Takamatsu Expressway and Kawanoe JCT, or about 2 hours via National Route 32. No official announcement of temporary parking during the autumn-leaf season has been confirmed. Because the area gets crowded, early arrival is recommended.
• Things to bring: Because the wind is cold when boarding the pleasure boat, don't forget a windbreaker or thick fleece. Because the riverside promenade has wet rocky areas, easy-to-walk shoes are essential. Also, because the contrast of light and shadow in the gorge is intense, we recommend using HDR settings or RAW format when shooting with a camera

Iya Valley

The village of Iya, counted as one of "Japan's three great hidden regions." True to its name, this land quietly breathing in a deep, steep gorge transforms, when autumn comes, into a brocade carpet across the whole mountain far from human habitation. Because commercialization is kept to a minimum, you can receive the air of real autumn with all five senses, in a stillness unrelated to autumn-leaf crowds. The droplets of leaves fluttering down each time the wind crosses the gorge, the carpet of colorful fallen leaves piling at your feet—autumn in the Iya Valley is something you feel not just with your eyes but with your whole body.

The best season is early to mid-November (1 to 2 weeks later than Oboke). Due to the gorge's characteristics, the colors shine most vividly in the time when the afternoon light hits. In the morning, mist often hangs over the gorge, letting you enjoy yet another superb view, a different flavor of autumn leaves within fantastical mist. For the greedy traveler who wants to see both expressions, we strongly recommend an overnight stay.

The symbol of the Iya Valley, "Kazurabashi," is a wild suspension bridge woven from Shirakuchi vine. The view of the gorge and autumn leaves looking down through the gaps at your feet is a one-of-a-kind experience where thrill and superb view rush in at the same time. While your heart rate rises from the bridge's swaying and the rapids visible beneath your feet, you can't help but stop at the beauty of the autumn leaves leaping into your eyes—this contradictory sensation is precisely the real thrill of the Iya Valley that you can taste only on Kazurabashi. Note that Kazurabashi is rebuilt every three years, and the bridge itself, the handiwork of artisans, also has historical and cultural value.

Furthermore, the "Manneken Pis" statue viewpoint that appears as you proceed deeper along the gorge is famous among locals as a viewing spot where you can survey the entire Iya Valley. The full view of the U-shaped meandering gorge and autumn leaves seen from this rustic place where tour buses don't stop is breathtakingly beautiful. This spot, which locals call "my favorite place in the Iya Valley," may have low name recognition, but most who visit can't help but post it to social media—a superb-view spot. For the traveler who wants to meet a real superb view while avoiding crowds, it will become the finest reward.

Also, in this land where legends of fleeing Heike clan members remain, old-house lodgings are scattered about, and we also recommend the extraordinary travel experience of staying a night and spending the long autumn evening in the light of a lamp. The stillness, where only the sound of the river and the voice of the wind heard from the gorge reach your ears as the night deepens, is a luxury you absolutely cannot obtain in the city. The next morning, a cup of tea drunk while gazing from the porch at the autumn-leaf mountains slowly emerging from the mist—you'll surely realize that you traveled all this way for that moment.

Access

• By bus: From JR Awa-Ikeda Station, take the Shikoku Kotsu Bus "Iya Line" and get off at the "Iya Onsen-guchi" or "Kazurabashi" bus stop (about 1 hour to 1 hour 20 minutes). Because the number of services is limited, check the timetable in advance and be sure to grasp the return bus too
• By car: About 30 to 40 minutes from Oboke and Koboke via National Route 32 and Prefectural Route 45. If visiting as a set with Oboke, it's smooth to enjoy Oboke in the morning and move to the Iya Valley in the afternoon
• Notes: The roads along the gorge are very narrow, with many spots where passing is difficult. Those not used to driving are safer using the bus. Kazurabashi requires a separate entrance fee (adults/junior-high-school students and above 550 yen, elementary-school students 350 yen, young children free). Also, because there are areas where mobile phone signal is hard to reach, we strongly recommend a paper map or downloading an offline map in advance. Because the roads in the gorge grow rapidly dark after sunset, finishing your travel while it's bright is the iron rule

Autumn-Leaf Peak and How to Enjoy It

Tokushima's autumn leaves begin from high-altitude Mt. Tsurugi, then are handed off, as if in a relay, to Oboke and then the Iya Valley. Being able to meet superb autumn-colored views without choosing the timing of your trip during the roughly two months of early October to late November is this prefecture's great appeal.

If touring the 3 spots efficiently, the one-night, two-day model course of going around in the order Mt. Tsurugi → Oboke → Iya Valley is recommended. Fully enjoy Mt. Tsurugi and Oboke on the first day, stay at an old-house lodging in the Iya Valley, and enjoy the mist-wrapped gorge beauty the next morning—such an itinerary is the best way to savor Tokushima's autumn to the fullest.

Set a schedule with plenty of room for driving the mountain roads with their altitude differences, and the journey itself, driving while feeling the "reluctance to leave for the next place" at each location, is also part of this trip.

Practical Information for the Autumn Foliage Season (Based on Official Announcements)

Tokushima's autumn foliage spots revolve around paid attractions — a lift, a pleasure boat, and vine bridges — that sit at the heart of any itinerary. All three saw changes to fares or operations in 2026, so the following is a summary of primary information published by each operator, relevant local governments, and the Tokushima Prefecture Tourism Association as of 6 September 2026.

Tsurugi-san Kanko Tozan Lift (Minokoshi – Nishijima)

• Group discount: approximately 10% off for groups of 25 or more, approximately 20% off for groups of 60 or more
• Cash payment only. Cards and electronic money are not accepted.
• Minokoshi Station to Nishijima Station: slant distance 830 m, journey time 15 minutes.

Winter Road Restrictions on National Route 438 Leading to Minokoshi

• According to the Tsurugicho official website, during the 2025–2026 winter National Route 438 from "Miyoshi City Higashi-Iya-Sugao (Minokoshi) to Ichiu Kuwadaira Second Hairpin" (13.1 km) was subject to nighttime closure (26 December 2025 – 31 March 2026, 18:00–8:00) due to the risk of snow accumulation and icy road surfaces.
• Separately, Tokushima Prefecture also implements an all-day, all-night total closure in some years starting in early to mid-December (a closure was enforced on 18 December 2024).
• The restrictions for winter 2026–2027 had not been announced as of 6 September. If you plan to travel toward Tsurugi-san from late November onward, check the current year's restrictions with the Tsurugicho Community Promotion Division (0883-62-3114).

Oboke Gorge Pleasure Boat

• ⚠ Fares were revised on 17 June 2026 (previous: adults 1,500 yen / children 750 yen). Old fares remain on some travel portals.
• Reception and operating hours: 9:00–17:00 (last departure: 16:30)
• Open year-round. Cancellations occur in strong winds or high water. Service may be shortened when water levels are low.
• Duration: approx. 30 minutes return (4 km). Each vessel holds 25 passengers; 5 vessels in operation.
• Passengers must fill in a boarding form (one form per group).

Iya no Kazurabashi (Vine Bridge)
