Yonago City and Kaike-Nakaumi Area: Enjoying Culture and Gourmet in San'in's Commercial City

Yonago City in Tottori Prefecture is a city that developed as the transportation and commercial hub of the Sanin region. Yonago Castle Ruins and Minatoyama Park

The Yonago Castle Ruins, built on Minatoyama in the city center, are designated a National Historic Site. It was once a famous castle with a grand keep of four tiers and five stories, but today only the stone walls remain. Standing on the keep base, you can take in a sweeping Sanin panorama of Lake Nakaumi, the Sea of Japan, and Mt. Daisen all at once. In recent years it has grown popular as a mountain castle of spectacular views, and more people come seeking the early-morning sea of clouds and evening scenery. Minatoyama Park at the foot of the ruins is a cherry blossom spot that bustles with viewers in spring.

Kaike Onsen

Kaike Onsen, along the coast of Yonago City, is one of Sanin leading hot spring areas, facing the Sea of Japan. Known as the birthplace of triathlon in Japan, it hosts a race each summer that gathers athletes from across the country. At inns overlooking the sea, you can enjoy the salt-containing hot springs and fresh seafood to your heart content. The hot water is abundant, and free or easily accessible footbaths are set up along the shore.

Sanin Food Culture

Because Yonago City lies near the border with Shimane Prefecture, the food cultures of both prefectures intermingle. Izumo soba culture has also taken hold, and at city soba restaurants you can enjoy wari-ko soba, eaten with condiments from a stacked lacquerware vessel. Sakaiminato, which boasts among Japan largest catches, is close by, so seafood cuisine using fresh catches such as Matsuba crab, tuna, and red snow crab is well represented. Daisen-brand dairy products and craft beer nurtured at the foot of the famed Mt. Daisen are also popular.

The greenery and autumn foliage seasons when Mt. Daisen looks beautiful, and summer when swimming and hot springs can be enjoyed, are recommended. Access and Essentials

JR Yonago Station is a transportation hub where the Sanin Main Line and Hakubi Line meet, about 2 hours from Okayama by the limited express Yakumo and about 1 hour from Tottori City by limited express. By air, Yonago Kitaro Airport (Miho Airfield) is close by, with flights from Tokyo (Haneda). City sightseeing is convenient by bus or car from the station. Kaike Onsen and the Yonago Castle Ruins are about 10 to 15 minutes by car from the station.

Practical Travel Notes

• The view from the Yonago Castle keep base is especially beautiful at early morning and evening, and in the early mornings of autumn to winter, when conditions for a sea of clouds align, people gather to seek the spectacle. Mind your footing on the stone steps.
• At Kaike Onsen, inns line the coast, and they differ more in view and cuisine style than in water quality. If crab cuisine is your goal, book early for winter.
• The location makes it easy to plan a tour of western Sanin from Yonago as a base, together with Sakaiminato, the Yumigahama Peninsula, and Mt. Daisen.
• Specialties such as Izumo soba and crab have different serving seasons and hours by shop, so check in advance if you have a specific goal.

Yonago is less a flashy tourist destination than a comfortable base for touring Sanin. Using it as a starting point for a western Sanin trip together with Sakaiminato, the Yumigahama Peninsula, and Mt. Daisen is recommended.
