Mt. Daisen (Hoki Fuji): Climbing the Highest Peak in the Chugoku Region and Majestic Beech Forests

Mt. Daisen in Daisen Town, western Tottori Prefecture, is the highest peak in the Chugoku region, with its main summit Kengamine reaching 1,729 meters. The best climbing period runs from early summer, after the remaining snow melts, through autumn. Fresh greenery is at its best in May and June, and autumn foliage in October and November, when the beech forest turns golden. A round trip to the Misen summit takes roughly half a day including rest stops.

You can reach the Daisen-ji area, which serves as the trailhead, by Nihon Kotsu bus from JR Yonago Station. At the foot of the mountain stand Daisen-ji Temple, said to have been founded in 718, and the Inner Shrine of Okamiyama Shrine. The approach lined with giant cedars has a solemn atmosphere and has long been revered as a sacred training ground for shugendo ascetics.
