Koyasan Okunoin and Danjo Garan Sacred Sites Course
Koyasan is the sacred center of Shingon Buddhism, founded about 1200 years ago by the monk Kukai. Temples gather in a mountaintop basin at roughly 800 meters, wrapped in quiet and an air of prayer. This one-day walking course runs from the solemn cedar groves of Okunoin to the bright vermilion halls of Danjo Garan.
Course Route
9:00 Start at Koyasan Station Arrive at the mountain station by cable car, then transfer to a bus for the center. The air is cool and clear, a world apart from the plains below.
9:40 Enter the path at Okunoin Ichinohashi Bridge Walk the roughly two kilometer path from Ichinohashi to Gobyonohashi. Beneath centuries-old cedars stand rows of memorial towers for warlords and feudal lords.
11:00 Pay respects at the Kukai Mausoleum Beyond the lantern hall at the far end of the path lies the mausoleum. This is the most sacred place on the mountain, where Kukai is said to still be in meditation.
12:00 Vegetarian temple lunch Enjoy sesame tofu and seasonal vegetables at a temple lodging restaurant. It is a gentle, nourishing meal that brings out the flavor of each ingredient.
13:30 Move to Danjo Garan The founding center of Koyasan, where the vermilion Konpon Daito pagoda stands out above all.
14:30 Visit Kongobuji Temple The head temple of Koyasan Shingon Buddhism. Take time to view its rock garden and painted sliding doors.
16:00 Return to Koyasan Station After your visit, ride the cable car back down the mountain.
Highlights
The Okunoin path is a mystical space of cedars pierced by dappled light. The Konpon Daito pagoda in Danjo Garan rises about 48 meters, and its three dimensional mandala inside is a striking sight. If you have time, stay a night at a temple lodging and join the morning service.
Access and Tips
From Namba Station in Osaka, take the Nankai line to Gokurakubashi Station, then the cable car to Koyasan Station. Buses are the main way to move around the mountain, so a combined pass covering two days of temple entry and buses is handy. The mountaintop stays cool even in summer, so bring a light layer.
A Quick Tip
Okunoin is especially quiet in the early morning when few people are around, letting you fully sense its sacred atmosphere. The walking distance is long, so wear comfortable shoes.
