The sight of 123 vermilion torii gates lining up in a straight line toward the sea is like another world. The contrast with the blue Sea of Japan is overwhelming, and it is Yamaguchi's premier photogenic spot, drawing attention even from overseas media.

• Photogenic Point: The blue sea spreading out beyond the tunnel of torii. The three colors of sky, sea, and vermilion strike a miraculous balance!
• Best Time and Season: The time when morning light streams in is best. In spring to summer it pairs wonderfully with a blue sky

2. Tsunoshima Bridge | A Scenic Drive Crossing an Emerald-Green Sea

The sight of the 1,780m-long bridge stretching smoothly across the crystal-clear emerald sea is moving. It was even chosen as one of "Japan's 100 Best Bridges" and is a spectacular sight representing Yamaguchi.

• Best Time and Season: Morning to midday on a sunny day. From early summer to summer the blue of the sea is most vivid
• Recommended Angle: A wide composition capturing the whole bridge from the observation deck is the classic. Use a vertical composition to lavishly fill the frame with sky and sea
• Access: About 15 minutes by taxi from JR Yutama Station, or buses from Shimonoseki Station are convenient

3. Akiyoshidai | A Fantastical Vista of a Vast Karst Plateau

Akiyoshidai, one of Japan's largest karst plateaus, is an extraordinary landscape found nowhere else, with countless white limestone rocks scattered across the grassland. The vast grassland spreads out, and every angle makes a picture.

Practical Information for Your Visit

• Best season and time of day: The Akiyoshidai grass burning usually takes place on the third Sunday of February, and the autumn colors of the grassland are usually at their best from mid-November to early December. For Tsunoshima Ohashi Bridge and Senjojiki, midday to evening on a clear day with crisp air is recommended.
• Opening hours / event periods: [Most important] At Motonosumi Shrine, worship is partly suspended on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from March to November 2026, during the Golden Week period from Saturday May 2 to Sunday May 10, and during the Obon period from Saturday August 8 to Sunday August 16, and you cannot walk through the red torii gates (worship is possible on weekdays). Even during the suspension periods you can still view the torii from the "Ryugu no Shiofuki" side, and the shop and parking lot remain open. The offertory box has been removed.
• Admission: Kintaikyo Bridge charges a crossing fee. Iwakuni City revised it on 1 September 2026, and it is now 500 yen for adults (junior high school students and above) and 250 yen for elementary school children (free for preschool children, no reservation required, no one-way fare — the rate is for a round trip). The combination ticket for the bridge, ropeway and Iwakuni Castle is 1,550 yen for adults and 700 yen for elementary school children. Entry to Senjojiki and its parking are both free of charge.
• Access: For Akiyoshidai, take a bus about 40 minutes from JR Shin-Yamaguchi Station, get off at "Akiyoshido" and walk about 30 minutes (from Akiyoshido there is a loop bus on weekends and public holidays, and the "Karusuto Taxi" on weekdays). Senjojiki is about 10 minutes by car (taxi) from JR Nagato-Furuichi Station, about 50 minutes from the Mine IC on the Chugoku Expressway, and about 10 minutes by car from Motonosumi Shrine. The nearest station to Tsunoshima Ohashi Bridge is JR Kottoi Station.
• Parking: Senjojiki has about 200 free spaces for general vehicles (large buses accepted). The Motonosumi Shrine parking lot stays open even during the worship suspension periods.
• Photography etiquette: At Akiyoshidai, photography for anything other than personal use requires permission and an application, and visitors are directed to consult the Akiyoshidai Museum of Natural History. Stopping and parking on Tsunoshima Ohashi Bridge is prohibited, so take your photographs from Amagase Park (the observation deck) or the parking lot on the Tsunoshima side. At Motonosumi Shrine, you cannot enter the torii gates to take photographs during the worship suspension periods.
• Safety notes: Senjojiki is a plateau at an elevation of 333 m where the wind is strong, so beware of your tripod being blown over. Both Motonosumi Shrine and Senjojiki are on cliffs facing the sea, so do not go beyond the fences. Akiyoshidai is karst terrain with sinkholes (dolines) hidden in the grass, so please take care not to stray from the walking paths.
