Iwaya Kannon Cave

Tucked into the mountains of Mikawa in Iwakuni City, the Iwaya Kannon Cave is a mysterious sanctuary where a Kannon image is enshrined within a limestone cave of ancient strata. A wooden figure said to have been carved from old timber by Kobo Daishi was, over many years, dripped upon by stalactite water until it turned to stone, making it a very rare image. It was designated a national natural monument in 1934.

Highlights

- An extraordinarily rare Kannon image turned to stone by the dripping of stalactites - The sacred, otherworldly air drifting within the cool cave - The cave mouth that opens after climbing a stone stairway of about 10 meters in front of Goshoji Temple

Enjoying the Seasons

The interior of the cave stays cool throughout the year, wrapping visitors in chilly air even in summer. In spring, the Iwaya Kannon Festival in April brings crowds and many worshippers. The fresh-green season makes the surrounding mountains beautiful, and the autumn foliage period offers a quiet charm.

Access and Basic Information

- Location: Goshoji Temple, Negasa, Mikawa, Iwakuni City, Yamaguchi Prefecture - The cave mouth lies up a stone stairway of about 10 meters from the front of Goshoji Temple - Said to bless academic success and safe childbirth - Please check with Goshoji Temple before visiting
