Tsunoshima Bridge and Hagi Castle Town — Yamaguchi's Scenic Views and History
Tsunoshima Bridge and Hagi Castle Town
Yamaguchi Prefecture rewards travelers who venture beyond its more famous sights with two destinations of extraordinary character: Tsunoshima, a tiny island connected to the mainland by a 1,780-meter bridge over Caribbean-blue waters, and Hagi, a castle town where the samurai street plan of the Edo period survives almost perfectly intact, cradling the revolutionary history that launched modern Japan.
Highlights
Tsunoshima Bridge arches gracefully over translucent aquamarine sea that is often compared to the Mediterranean or Maldives in its clarity and color — remarkable for the Sea of Japan. The island itself is small enough to cycle in an hour, with a lighthouse, fishing village, and beaches of white sand and crystal water. Hagi, some two hours' drive south, preserves its Edo-period samurai quarter (joka-machi) with white-walled residences, narrow lanes, and the ruins of Hagi Castle (Shizuki Castle). The city was the birthplace of many leaders of the Meiji Restoration including Ito Hirobumi and Yamagata Aritomo, and its history is brought to life at excellent local museums.
Getting There & Tips
- Tsunoshima: Nearest train station is Nagatoshi (JR San'in Line); access by car from there (approximately 30 minutes) or by sightseeing bus in peak season. - Hagi: From Shin-Yamaguchi Station, take the Super Oki or Nanpuu limited express train to Higashi-Hagi Station (approximately 1 hour). - A rental car connecting both destinations makes the most efficient itinerary. - Hagi's famous Hagi ware ceramics and夏みかん (summer citrus) products are excellent souvenirs.
Best Time to Visit
Tsunoshima's waters are most brilliantly colored on sunny summer days (July–August), though the bridge is beautiful year-round. Hagi is wonderful in spring with its castle ruins and white walls framed by cherry blossoms, and in autumn when the samurai lanes are quiet and golden. Winter brings the fewest crowds and a deeply atmospheric stillness to both destinations.
