Kintaikyo Bridge

Counted as one of Japan's three famous bridges, Kintaikyo Bridge increases its beauty many times over in autumn. The contrast woven by the graceful wooden bridge drawing five arches and the vivid autumn foliage of maples and ginkgo coloring its surroundings is so overwhelmingly breathtaking that your feet stop in their tracks the moment it spreads before your eyes. And the special sight you can taste only in this place is the "inverted autumn foliage" reflected on the clear water surface of the Nishiki River. The burning autumn leaves spread within the water mirror as well, and the fantastical world where reality and mirror image overlap makes your chest tremble before any words come.

The peak of the best viewing is early to mid-November. These two weeks are the golden period when Kintaikyo Bridge shines its very brightest, with the entire bridge wrapped in a frame of autumn foliage. There are broadly two recommended time slots. One is the early morning, when river mist drifts. A luxurious time awaits in which you can almost monopolize the dramatic scene woven by morning mist, autumn foliage, and the bridge, amid a silence with hardly any tourists yet. The other is after sunset, when the bridge is lit up. The vermilion bridge emerges in the darkness of night, and combined with the light reflections swaying on the water surface and the autumn foliage, it produces an unreal beauty as if you were inside a dream.

You will also want to be sure to capture a hidden photo spot known only to locals. The angle from the Kikko Park side across the bridge is a prime position where the full view of the bridge and the autumn foliage mountains spreading behind it fit into a single picture. You can aim for your very own shot that you will not find in tourist pamphlets. Also, savoring the local specialty "Iwakuni sushi" at a teahouse within Kikko Park while gazing at the autumn foliage is a special way to enjoy it that will remain in your travel memory.

Access

About 20 minutes by bus from "Iwakuni Station" on the JR Sanyo Main Line (Iwakuni City Tourism Association official), right after getting off at the "Kintaikyo" bus stop. Access is easy, about 1 hour by highway bus even from Hiroshima Station, and a set plan with Hiroshima sightseeing is also popular. By car, it is about 10 minutes (about 5.3 km) from the "Iwakuni IC" on the Sanyo Expressway. However, on weekends during the autumn foliage season (early to late November), it is not unusual for traffic jams waiting for parking to occur after 10 a.m. To avoid wearing out your precious trip in traffic, we strongly recommend using public transportation, or visiting on a weekday or in the early morning.

Tips for travelers: Crossing the bridge requires a bridge toll — from 1 September 2026 the revised toll is 500 yen for adults (junior-high-school students and above) and 250 yen for elementary-school children. The old 310 yen rate is no longer valid. There is no one-way toll; the published rate is for the round trip. A combined ticket (bridge + ropeway + Iwakuni Castle) costs 1,550 yen for adults. The riverside gets colder than you would imagine, so even though it is autumn on the calendar, be sure to bring a thin jacket. The light-up is often held only on weekends during the autumn foliage season, so checking the dates on the official website before your visit is reassuring. For early-morning visits, the footing around the bridge can be slippery with frost, so shoes with sturdy soles are recommended.

Chomonkyo Gorge

When you ask a local "where is your favorite autumn foliage in Yamaguchi?", the more in-the-know they are, the more unhesitatingly they answer "Chomonkyo." That is how exceptional the beauty of this gorge's autumn foliage is. A promenade extending about 5.1 kilometers along the clear stream of the Abu River is maintained, and the gradation of autumn foliage that changes its expression with each step you take is like an open-air exhibition carefully prepared by nature. Passing through the tunnel of maples covering overhead, and treading on fallen leaves while listening intently to the murmuring of the river, is a treasured extraordinary experience that makes you completely forget the hustle and bustle of daily life.

The best viewing is mid to late November, relatively late among the main autumn foliage spots within Yamaguchi Prefecture. Visiting after the peak of Kintaikyo and Akiyoshidai has passed lets you enjoy Yamaguchi's autumn even longer as an "autumn foliage relay." Walking the entire course takes about 3 to 4 hours, but a welcome point even for beginners is that you can turn back wherever you like according to your stamina and time. Those who think "I want to try it lightly first" can fully savor the gorge's beauty even with a turnaround about 1 hour from the entrance.

The greatest spot of awe at Chomonkyo, which locals will quietly tell you about, is "Ryugu-buchi," partway along the course. The sight of fallen autumn leaves gently floating on the deep pool's water surface, shining emerald green, is a serene beauty so breathtaking it takes your breath away. It is a spot you will surely want to stop at even if it takes time, and it can be called the "climax" of Chomonkyo. Starting early and arriving at Ryugu-buchi during the time slot when the soft morning light streams in is the connoisseur's way to enjoy it.

Access

About a 5-minute walk from "Chomonkyo Station" on the JR Yamaguchi Line brings you to the entrance of the hiking course. Access is good, about 30 minutes by train from Yamaguchi Station, and combining it with sightseeing in Yamaguchi City is also convenient. By car, it is about 40 minutes from the "Ogori IC" on the Chugoku Expressway, or about 50 minutes from the "Kano IC." There is a free parking lot at Ryugu-buchi (100 regular cars, 6 large buses). When using public transportation, the return train can be infrequent during some time slots, so looking up the timetable in advance is reassuring.

(light bulb) Tips for travelers: The promenade along the gorge has many spots where the footing becomes slippery after rain or with wet fallen leaves. Trekking shoes are by far safer than sneakers. Since there are hardly any shops from the middle of the hike onward, be sure to procure drinks and light snacks around Chomonkyo Station before setting off. Also, since the temperature inside the gorge suddenly drops when the sun goes behind clouds, it is better to take it on in a layered style that is easy to put on and take off.

Akiyoshidai

Many people may have the image that "when it comes to Akiyoshidai, it's the karst plateau." But in fact, Akiyoshidai in autumn is precisely Yamaguchi's hidden breathtaking spot that repeat visitors who have once been there unanimously say "I want to come again." The contrast between the milky-white limestone scattered casually across the vast grassland and the burning autumn foliage enveloping the surroundings is a one-of-a-kind landscape that even carries an exotic charm hard to believe is within Japan. Since tourists do not concentrate here as much as at Kintaikyo or Chomonkyo, it is a luxurious place where you can enjoy Yamaguchi's autumn leisurely, as if strolling through your very own garden.

The best viewing is mid-November to early December (as listed as the 「例年の見頃」 by the Yamaguchi Prefecture Tourism Federation), relatively late among Yamaguchi's autumn foliage seasons. The most recommended time slot is from late morning into early afternoon. During this time, when light pours over the entire plateau spreading across the high ground, both the colors of the autumn foliage and the white limestone shine beautifully, making it also ideal for photography. Also, when you look out toward Akiyoshido from the plateau's observation deck, the land dyed in autumn foliage spreads out below your eyes, and you find a voice escaping at the magnificent scale.

The hidden gem that local guides secretly recommend is the promenade on the north side of the plateau. In this area off the main route crowded with tourists, a double breathtaking view unique to autumn spreads out, where you can enjoy silver-shining pampas grass and vividly colored autumn foliage at the same time. The contrast of the pampas grass plumes and the autumn foliage, whose expression changes with the play of light, is not only photogenic but also a beauty that touches the heart, somehow evoking the original landscape of Japan.

Access

About 40 minutes by bus from "Shin-Yamaguchi Station" on the JR Sanyo Main Line, getting off at the "Akiyoshidai" bus stop. Or you can also climb up to the plateau by about a 30-minute walk from the "Akiyoshido" bus stop. The route from Akiyoshido is a continuous uphill climb, but the emotion of the moment your view opens up partway is exceptional. By car, access is easy, about 5 minutes from the "Akiyoshidai IC" on the Ogori-Hagi Road, making it an ideal location for touring by rental car. Since the plateau is extremely vast, prepare comfortable walking shoes and sun protection (hat, sunglasses) as essential items.

(light bulb) Tips for travelers: Since Akiyoshidai is a plateau spreading at an elevation of about 180 to 420 meters, it is not unusual for the temperature to be 3 to 5 degrees lower than the lowlands. Even during the autumn foliage season, bring an extra layer of cold-weather gear and visit fully prepared. Also, if you have come all the way to Akiyoshidai, a set visit with "Akiyoshido," the cave spreading underground, is absolutely recommended. The experience of looking up at the ground-level autumn foliage scenery from near the exit of the limestone cave, which boasts one of the Orient's foremost scales, is truly a special moment you can encounter only here. The cave interior is cool at about 17 degrees year-round, so keeping something to put on in your bag lets you enjoy it comfortably.

Best Viewing Time for Autumn Foliage and How to Enjoy It

Yamaguchi's autumn foliage season continues for a full two months or so, from early October to late November. This is because the best viewing shifts little by little due to differences in the elevation and topography of each spot. This "time lag" is the greatest charm of a Yamaguchi autumn foliage trip. If you combine them well, you can realize an "autumn foliage relay" that lets you experience multiple peaks in a single trip.

What we want the ambitious to try by all means is a model course touring all three spots in 2 nights and 3 days. A route of Kintaikyo Bridge on the first day (aiming for an early-morning visit plus the light-up), fully savoring Akiyoshidai and Akiyoshido as a set on the second day, and hiking Chomonkyo on the final day lets you experience Yamaguchi's autumn fully, without leaving anything out. Between travels, savor Yamaguchi gourmet such as the local fugu cuisine and Iwakuni sushi too, and taste Yamaguchi's autumn to the fullest with all five senses.

This autumn, by all means come to Yamaguchi. A journey to encounter breathtaking views, be healed by nature, and touch the warmth of the locals awaits you. Surely, on the way home, you will find yourself murmuring "I want to come again next year, too.\"

Practical Information for the Autumn Foliage Season (Based on Official Announcements)

Fares, services, and road closure information change from year to year during the foliage season. The Kintaikyo Bridge Entry Fee Was Revised on 1 September 2026

Iwakuni City's official page states: "The entry fee was revised on 1 September 2026 [令和8年9月1日]." If you visit having seen the old fee (adults ¥310) still circulating online, you will be caught off guard at the ticket gate.

• Young children are free; no reservation required
• There is no single-direction entry fee (the fee covers a return crossing only)
• Once you have purchased a bridge entry ticket, you cannot upgrade to the combination ticket
• Ticket office hours: 8:00–17:00 (extended to 18:00 during the tourist season; 19:00 during summer)
• The bridge is accessible 24 hours a day but is not free — during unstaffed hours, deposit the fee in the night payment box. Night-time lighting is switched off at 22:00

The Iwakuni Castle Ropeway Has Full-Day Closures During the Foliage Season

According to the Iwakuni Castle Ropeway's official maintenance calendar (updated 15 July 2026), two full-day closures fall in the middle of the foliage season.

This page is published under the heading "Ropeway Closures and Iwakuni Castle Closure Days," meaning Iwakuni Castle is also closed on ropeway closure days.

• Ropeway fares: Adults ¥900 return / ¥500 one-way; primary school children ¥400 return / ¥250 one-way
• Operating hours: 9:00–17:00; departures every hour at :00, :15, :30, and :45; journey approx. 3 minutes; capacity 25 passengers
• Iwakuni Castle: Adults (junior high school age and above) ¥350 / primary school children ¥200; 9:00–16:45 (last admission 16:30). Cars cannot drive up to the castle; there is no lift inside

The Hiking Trail from Momijidani Park to Iwakuni Castle Is Closed (Reopening Date Unknown)

According to a notice issued by the Iwakuni City Tourism Promotion Division on 25 June 2026, a landslide caused by heavy rain on that date has closed the hiking trail from Momijidani Park to Iwakuni Castle. Bicycles, motorcycles, cars, and electric unicycles are also prohibited. The official notice states: "The reopening date has not been determined."

This means that in autumn 2026, it is not possible to walk up to Iwakuni Castle. The ropeway is the only means of reaching Iwakuni Castle. Combined with the two full-day ropeway closures (29 October and 26 November), there is effectively no way to reach Iwakuni Castle on those two days. Please check before deciding on your dates (Iwakuni City Tourism Promotion Division 0827-29-5116).

Note that the Iwakuni Castle official page still lists the hiking trail as an access option, so do not make your plans based on that page alone.

The Kintaikyo Car Park Resumed Paid Operations on 5 September 2026

According to a notice from the Iwakuni City Tourism Promotion Division, the collection of car park charges — suspended from 1 July 2026 to protect staff from heat-related illness — resumed on Saturday 5 September 2026. Any information describing the Kintaikyo car park as free refers only to this temporary summer arrangement.

• Kintaikyo Kawashita Car Park: Private cars — ¥300 all day / Buses — ¥1,000 all day
• Charges apply during March–May and September–November on weekends and public holidays, during the cherry blossom season, and during Golden Week (except in severe weather or when the river is in flood)
• Paid attendant hours: 8:30–17:00 (subject to change)
• Both the Kawashita car park and the temporary car park advise against overnight parking
• Momijidani Park has no dedicated car park; visitors use the Kintaikyo and Kikko Park car parks (Yamaguchi Prefecture Tourism Federation)

Do Not Count on the Nagato-kyo Shuttle Bus

The Yamaguchi Prefecture Tourism Federation's Nagato-kyo page includes both a description stating "a shuttle bus connecting the entrances to the gorge trail operates during the foliage season" and a notice reading "Notice of Nagato-kyo Shuttle Bus Suspension for 2024 / The bus will not operate this year (October 2024)" — both on the same page. No announcement has been found for 2025 or 2026, meaning the 2026 service status has not been announced.

The gorge trail is approximately 5.1 km one-way. Planning to walk one-way on the assumption that the shuttle bus will be running could leave you facing a round trip of more than 10 km. Please confirm with NPO Atou (083-956-2526 / 9:00–18:00 except Mondays) before you set out.

• Nagato-kyo: No admission fee (guided tours are charged); Ryugu-buchi car park: 100 regular cars and 6 large buses, all free
• Access: 5 minutes' walk from JR Yamaguchi Line Nagato-kyo Station / 40 minutes by car from Ogori IC on the Chugoku Expressway; 50 minutes by car from Shishino IC

Akiyoshido Cave Uses Variable Pricing; November Is at the Standard Rate

The Mine City Tourism Association's official price list carries the note "revised 1 April 2026 [令和8年4月1日]," introducing a variable pricing system. October and November — the foliage season — fall in the standard rate period.

• From 1 December, the low-season rate applies. If your schedule is flexible, combining a late foliage visit with the lower price is worth considering
• Visitors holding a disability certificate pay half the individual rate (the certificate holder and one companion; all types and grades of disability accepted)
• During the standard period, the last entry (and cave closing) is 9:00–16:30. As sunset comes early in the foliage season, this is effectively the cut-off time
• Open year-round (including the year-end and New Year period); the cave interior maintains a temperature of approximately 17°C throughout the year
• Suggested sightseeing time: approx. 60 minutes (round trip approx. 90 minutes); tourist route approx. 1 km
• "The joint discount ticket with Akiyoshidai Safari Land ended on 31 March 2026" (official notice). The current arrangement is a discount obtained by presenting the used ticket from whichever venue you visit first, at the other venue

Car park charges differ by entrance. The city-run No. 1 car park (200 spaces) and No. 2 car park (300 spaces) near the main entrance charge ¥500 per regular car per day (up to 2.5 m in height), but the Kurozo Entrance area (120 regular cars, 10 buses) and the Elevator Entrance area (150 regular cars, 2 buses) are both free. Note that the last admission at the Kurozo Information Office and the Akiyoshidai Information Office is fixed at 16:30.

Foliage Peak Times Should Be Read as "Figures Cited by the Prefecture Tourism Federation"

The Yamaguchi Prefecture Tourism Federation's foliage feature page, "2026 Yamaguchi Prefecture Recommended Autumn Foliage Spots," lists the following timing. However, the same page carries a note stating "the 2026 colour-change status will be updated as the foliage season approaches; we are also showing the peak times from last season (2025)." The "2026 colour-change status" column for every spot still shows "before colouring" and has not been filled in as of September 2026. Please read the dates below on the understanding that they are most likely last season's record rather than a 2026 forecast.

Check for Bear Sighting Reports

On its foliage feature page, the Yamaguchi Prefecture Tourism Federation warns: "In recent years, damage caused by bears has been increasing across Japan. Before you set out, please check the latest sighting information and take every precaution for your safety." The recommended reference is the Yamaguchi Prefecture open-data map "YP Kumappu 2026." If you plan to walk in mountain areas such as Nagato-kyo, Jakuchi-kyo, or Akiyoshidai, please take a look before you leave.

Other Points to Bear in Mind During the Foliage Season

• The "Reiwa-era Major Renovation" of the Ruriko-ji Five-Storey Pagoda is complete, and the scaffolding has already been removed. The description "the pagoda is obscured by construction hoarding" does not apply in 2026
• Joei-ji (Sesshu-tei Garden) closes at 16:30 from November to March. An autumn illumination event takes place on weekend and public holiday evenings from Saturday 10 October to Monday 23 November 2026 (national holiday), but the official page also shows the 2027 dates alongside, so take care not to misread them. Last admission is 20:30
• Course C at Jakuchi-kyo is closed due to a rockfall; the information office closes from 1 December to 31 March
