Each of the five lakes has its own character: Kawaguchiko (Lake Kawaguchi) offers the best tourist infrastructure and most photogenic Fuji reflections; Yamanakako is the largest and favorite of windsurfers; Saiko and Shojiko feel wilder and less developed; Motosuko, featured on the ¥1,000 note's reverse side, provides the classic asymmetrical Fuji view beloved by Japanese artists.

The Aokigahara forest bordering Saiko and Shojiko — formed by lava flows from Fuji's last major eruption in 864 — is a place of genuinely eerie beauty, its trees growing from volcanic rock in twisted forms, the forest floor a sea of dark lava and thick moss. The Fuji Wind Cave (Fugaku Fuketsu) and Ice Cave (Narusawa Hyoketsu) within the forest offer fascinating subterranean exploration.

The Fuji Visitor Center in Fujiyoshida provides excellent context for understanding the mountain's geology, ecology, and religious history before exploring the surrounding landscapes.

Getting There & Tips

Direct buses from Shinjuku (approximately 2 hours) serve Kawaguchiko as the hub. A rental car or the area loop bus enables efficient access to all five lakes. The Fujikyu Highland amusement park is adjacent for families.

Best Time to Visit

Late April to early May for cherry blossoms with Fuji. Late September to November for autumn foliage reflected in lake surfaces.
