Akita City and Senshu Park Stroll: Itinerary (Akita)

Starting from Senshu Park, laid out over the ruins of Kubota Castle, this easygoing day trip lets you taste the history and food of Akita City on foot. It stays within the city center, making it well suited to train travel.

Course Route

9:30 Start at Senshu Park In this park built on the Kubota Castle ruins, tour the corner turret and the honmaru site. Cherry trees and a lotus pond color the seasons. It is only about a 10-minute walk from Akita Station, and even a relaxed stroll covers the main sights in around an hour.

11:00 Visit the Akita City Red Brick Folklore Museum See the Meiji-era brick architecture and learn about Akita crafts and daily life. Allow roughly 30 to 45 minutes for the visit.

12:00 Lunch in the city center Enjoy local dishes such as kiritanpo hot pot and Hinai chicken parent-and-child rice bowl. Restaurants serving local fare gather around the station and the Omachi area.

13:30 Stroll Kawabata and Omachi Walk past old merchant houses and riverside lanes, stopping at sake shops and sweet cafes. This is a pleasant area for an unhurried walk of one to two hours.

15:00 Rest at Area Nakaichi End the trip at this complex with a lively plaza while choosing souvenirs.

Highlights

Senshu Park is a beloved cherry-blossom spot. Kubota Castle is unusual in having no main keep, and the corner turret, reconstructed in 1989, offers a view over the city. The main sights in the park connect one after another on foot.

Access and Tips

Its appeal is that everything sits within walking distance of Akita Station. The Kubota Castle ruins in Senshu Park are about a 10-minute walk from the station, and the whole course can be toured on foot. On rainy days it is more comfortable to shift toward indoor sites such as the Red Brick Folklore Museum and Area Nakaichi.

Practical Travel Notes

• Time needed: About 5 to 6 hours in total. Since all movement is within walking distance, the course is easy to shorten or extend to suit your energy.
• Getting around: The route starts at Akita Station and is almost entirely on foot. To ease movement around the city, you can also use Akita Chuo Kotsu local buses or city loop bus routes.
• About the corner turret: The corner turret of Kubota Castle is open as an observation facility, offering a view over central Akita from inside. Opening periods and hours vary by season, so it is wise to check in advance.
• Avoiding crowds: During the cherry blossom peak, typically mid to late April, Senshu Park grows very busy. For a calmer walk, early morning is recommended.
• Budget sense: With museum admission and lunch combined, this walk-focused course can be enjoyed comfortably without a large outlay.

A Quick Tip

In the evening the eateries around Kanto Odori come alive. Enjoying a little local sake to savor an Akita night is a fine way to finish.

About this course (time required and how to get around)

• The whole itinerary takes about 5-6 hours. Starting from JR Akita Station, Senshu Park, the Akarenga Local Museum, Omachi and Area Nakaichi are all within walking distance of one another.
• Senshu Park is about a 10-minute walk from JR Akita Station. A single loop of the park alone takes about an hour.

Opening hours and closing days of each facility

• Kubota Castle Osumi-yagura Turret: Viewing hours are 9:00-16:30. However, during the summer holidays of the municipal elementary and junior high schools it is open 9:00-19:00. It is closed from December 1 until March 31 of the following year (closed in winter).
• Akita City Akarenga Local Museum (Katsuhira Tokushi Memorial Museum): Viewing hours are 9:30-16:30 (last entry 16:15). During the Kanto Festival (August 3-6) it is open until 19:00. It is closed over the New Year period (December 29-January 3) and during exhibition changeovers (dates vary).
• Senshu Park itself can be strolled freely.

Price guide

• Kubota Castle Osumi-yagura Turret: 150 yen for general admission (120 yen for groups of 20 or more). Free of charge for high school students and younger.
• Akita City Akarenga Local Museum: Admission 310 yen (240 yen for groups of 20 or more). Free of charge for high school students and younger. A combined ticket with the Akita City Folk Performing Arts Heritage Center and the Former Kaneko Family Residence costs 370 yen (290 yen for groups), and an annual passport costs 770 yen.
• Holders of a disability certificate (physical, intellectual or mental) and one accompanying carer are admitted free of charge to both the Osumi-yagura Turret and the Akarenga Local Museum.
• Both facilities accept cashless payment such as credit cards and electronic money.

Access

• About a 10-minute walk from the west exit of JR Akita Station to Senshu Park.
• The Akarenga Local Museum is at 3-3-21 Omachi, Akita City. You can walk there from Senshu Park heading toward the Omachi area.
• If you would like to make getting around the city easier, the Akita Chuo Kotsu route buses are also available.

Parking

• As this course is mainly on foot, if you come by car it is convenient to park at a coin parking lot around Akita Station or in the city center and walk from there.

What needs to be reserved

• At the Akarenga Local Museum, members of the "Akarenga Local Museum Volunteer Association" provide guided commentary inside the museum free of charge (the admission fee is still required). As the volunteers are not permanently on site, applications must be made at least three days before your preferred date.
• For group viewing (20 or more people) of the Osumi-yagura Turret, please let the reception desk know.

Points to note and safety information

• The Osumi-yagura Turret is closed in winter (December to March). If you visit Senshu Park in winter, it is safer to rearrange your plans around indoor facilities.
• The Akarenga Local Museum closes irregularly for exhibition changeovers. Check the official website before your visit.
• The city center becomes very crowded during the cherry blossom season (usually from mid to late April) and the Kanto Festival (early August). Book your accommodation early.
• Senshu Park has slopes and stairs leading up to the main enceinte. Please wear comfortable walking shoes.
